Review
From the reviews of the third edition: "This text concentrates on studying on-line algorithms, those whose adaptation occurs whenever a new sample of each environment signal is available. … This edition also includes basic introductions to nonlinear adaptive filtering and blind signal processing as natural extensions of the algorithms … . The book is of great importance for digital signal processing undergraduate and graduate courses in universities." (George S. Stavrakakis, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1155, 2009) "The book titled ‘Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation,’ Third Edition, by Paulo S. R. Diniz replaces two previous editions. This new edition has improved significantly upon those two editions. … The book is also very practical. To attest to its suitability as a teaching text, the author has given a number of carefully developed examples which are useful … to students. … Overall, the book is excellent for teaching the subject of adaptive signal processing and enhances the landscape of textbooks on the subject." (Tokunbo Ogunfunmi, IEEE Communications Magazine, October, 2009)
From the Back Cover
Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation, Third Edition, presents basic concepts of adaptive signal processing and filtering in a concise and straightforward manner. It concentrates on on-line algorithms whose adaptation occurs whenever a new sample of each environment signal is available. The material also illustrates block algorithms using a sub-band filtering framework whose adaptation occurs when a new block of data is available. Highlights of the new edition include: Expanded treatment of complex algorithms throughout the book New chapters on Data-Selective and Blind Adaptive Filtering An enlarged discussion of linear-constrained Wiener filters Detailed analysis of the affine projection algorithm Updated derivations and many new examples A primer on Kalman filtering in Appendix D as a complement to RLS algorithms. Algorithms are presented in a unified framework using a consistent notation that facilitates their actual implementation. The main algorithms are summarized and described in tables. Many examples address problems drawn from actual applications. The family of LMS and RLS algorithms as well as set-membership, sub-band, blind, nonlinear and IIR adaptive filtering, are covered. Problems are included at the end of chapters. Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation, Third Edition, is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying adaptive filtering and will also serve as an up-to-date and useful reference for professional engineers working in the field.
About the Author
Paulo S. R. Diniz was born in Niteroi, Brazil. He received the Electronics Engineer degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1978, the MSc degree from COPPE/UFRJ in 1981, and the PhD from Concordia University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, in 1984, all in electrical engineering. Since 1979, he has been with the undergraduate Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the UFRJ. He has also been with the graduate Program of Electrical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ since 1984, where he is presently a Professor. He has also served as undergraduate course coordinator and as chairman of the graduate department. From January 1991 to July 1992, he was a visiting Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2002 he served as Melchor Endowment Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Notre Dame, USA. Hehas taught short courses at numerous institutions around the world. His teaching and research interests are in analog and digital signal processing, adaptive signal processing, digital communications, wireless communications, multirate systems, stochastic processes and electronic circuits. He has published over 250 refereed papers in some of these areas, has written two books and has received awards for best papers and technical achievements. An excellent book
By Rodrigo de Lamare
The book by Prof. Diniz is indeed amongst the best on adaptive signal processing. Most of the fundamental concepts are well explained, suitable examples are given and practical applications are also discussed. The chapter on adaptive IIR filters is unique and still cannot be found in any other book. Moreover, solutions to the problems can be obtained by ftp, which is something very useful for students. Despite this is an excellent book (5 star), the price is ridiculous, as occurs with most titles from this publisher. If I were Prof. Diniz I would change from Kluwer Academic Publishers to a more competitive publisher.

A great book that describes the theory in a concise way.
By marcio@icsl.ucla.edu
Dr. Paulo Diniz has a unique view of the Adaptive Filtering field, due to years of extensive teaching experience. His book on Adaptive Filtering is a complete reference to the field, describing the theory in a concise way. The book develops the most important results in the field in less than 500 pages, including one chapter on IIR Adaptive Filtering - something that Haykin cannot beat.
The book is appealing to anyone who is interested in Adaptive Filtering and needs an extremely complete and concise reference. Highly recommended.

A sound reference
By Amazon Customer
The book has a modern approach for adaptive filtering which make it more readable than some classic references. Due to my academic formation (I have a degree in computing science), it is much more palatable than Haykin's book (which is surely a classic). Also, it has a particularly useful chapter on IIR adaptive filtering, which makes this book unique (for example, Sayed's book is a great reference, but doesn't mention IIR filters). This book surely worth a read!
