Wonderful edition of the Vergil's class THE AENEID

Being the "Latin Specialist" (what my classmates at school call me) at Catholic Central, I prefer to read Roman classics in the original Latin. This is what I have been looking for. Unfortunately, this edition features only the first six books of THE AENEID. However, it is wonderfully done. Each page features prehaps 20 lines of Latin, the vocabulary for that page, and explanation on difficult or strange grammar. There is also an EXTENSIVE review of grammar in the back. Also features a history of THE AENEID and Vergil. There are several word lists in the back, organized by the number of times the word appears in the first six books (a lot, often, one or twice). I recommend this to you if your taking AP Latin: Vergil or are looking for a Latin text of THE AENEID. Highly recommended!

Excellent for HS Latin students

What a wonderful introduction to Latin poetry this work is. The fold-out vocabulary sheet and on-the-page vocabulary lists (referenced by non-italicizing the text) faciliate translation for beginning Latin scholars who must plod through the 1800 lines or so for the AP exam. The notes are copious and provide a much needed introduction to general features of Latin poetry. This text should not however, be used at the college level when trying to gain greater self-sufficiency at reading Latin.

I wish there were more volumes like this

I took (by choice) four years of Latin in high school and have continued to play intermittently with the language since then. Of all the various texts and readers that I've seen over the years, Pharr's edition of "The Aeneid" is by far the best. Why? Because its structure removes much of the tedious burden of looking up vocabulary in the dictionary and allows the reader to focus on the way the language is used and to appreciate the literary aspects of the Virgil's work. Having the vocabulary for each page on the bottom of that page along with the standard grammatical notes was a stroke of genius. This page vocabulary is suppplemented by a bare-bones pull-out sheet of common words and a full grammar as an appendix, so everything the student-reader needs is right there and readily accessible.
My sole complaint is that this volume includes only Books 1-6. Even though Books 7-12 are generally considered less interesting than 1-6, they deserve a similar treatment as well. Barbara Boyd's Pharr-like treatment of selected scenes from 7-12 is just not enough for die-hard Virgil addicts.
I've seen relatively little comparable to Pharr for other Latin classics, but I'd love to find editions like this for Ovid, Livy, Cicero, or Horace. Pharr's approach is the most sensible I've found for instilling a sense of love for the Latin language in its students. If my high school teacher hadn't used Pharr's edition of Virgil all those years ago, I suspect my love for the Latin language would be a distant memory by now. Thanks to Pharr, Latin may have killed off all the Romans, but it didn't succeed in killing me.

Flourishing from the inland cities of Syria down through the Tigris and Euphrates valley, Syriac speakers in late antiquity created a new and often brilliant expression of Christian culture. Although the origins of their traditions are notoriously difficult to trace, authors of fourth-century Syrian communities achieved sophisticated forms of expression whose content little resembles the Christian culture of their neighbors to the west. From the fourth through the seventh centuries they achieved religious works of great beauty and complexity.

Increasing interest in Syriac Christianity has prompted recent translations and studies. To Train His Soul in Books explores numerous aspects of this rich religious culture, extending previous lines of scholarly investigation and demonstrating the activity of Syriac-speaking scribes and translators busy assembling books for the training of biblical interpreters, ascetics, and learned clergy.

Befitting an intensely literary culture, it begins with the development of Syriac poetry--the genre beloved by Ephrem and other, anonymous authors. It considers the long tradition of Aramaic and Syriac words for the chronic condition of sin, and explores the dimensions of the immense work of Syriac translators with a study of the Syriac life of Athanasius. Essays consider the activity of learned ascetics, with a proposal of the likely monastic origin of the Apocalypse of Daniel; the goal and concept of renunciation; and the changes rung by Syriac-speaking ascetics on the daily reality of housekeeping.

Also included in the volume are two essays on the influence of Syriac literary culture on Greek traditions, and in turn ascetic life. Finally, an original poem in Syriac demonstrates the continuing vitality of this culture, both in its homeland and in the Diaspora.

These essays seek to extend and honor the work of renowned scholar and pillar of the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages at the Catholic University of America, Sidney H. Griffith.

Articles on a variety of Syriac topics

This volume is a collection of articles written in honor of Professor Sidney H. Griffith of the Catholic University of America. (Full disclosure: He supervised my doctoral dissertation.) Prof. Griffith is a well known scholar of Syriac and of Christian Arabic. The articles in this book concentrate on the Syriac aspect of his work. Quite a variety of topics are covered here. Two articles deal with Syriac poetry, while the rest deal with the ascetic practices of Syrian "solitaries" (a kind of proto-monk) and monks.

This is not a full academic review of the book, so I will just give the table of contents and my comments on a few of the articles.

PART I. POETRY AND EPHREM THE SYRIAN
1. "Syriac Stropic Poetry: Intercalated Psalms," by Joseph P. Amar
2. "Efr�n de Nisibe, Himnos De Virginitate, I-III," by Francisco Javier Mart�nez
This is a translation into Spanish, with commentary, of Ephrem's Hymns I-III on Virginity. Mart�nez offers some useful notes contrasting his translation choices with those of previous translators.

PART II. TEXTS, TERMS, METAPHORS
3. "Redeem Your Sins through Works of Charity," by Gary A. Anderson
4. "A Monastic Setting for the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel," by Alexander Golitzin
What struck me as most interesting about this article was Golitzin's observation that this apocalypse was written at a time when what can popularly be called "end times fever" was gripping the Syriac-speaking Christian world in the aftermath of the conquest by Islam. As is typical in troubled times, a host of dire end-of-the-world scenarios was spun by Christian writers who were upset by the emergence of Islam. These dire apocalypses seem to have perturbed the normal order of monastic life, so the author of this Apocalypse of Daniel wrote a work that completely ignored events in the wider world, in an apparent attempt to get the monks focused again on their inner, spiritual lives instead of being obsessed with "end times" prophecies.

Crackerack Mystery by Fiona Quinn.

Fiona Quinn's novella, Mine, is a powerful, page-turner, about what happens to a school teacher/CSI in-training, separated from PTSD stricken husband, when she returns to her hometown. Mayhem - murder, snarky characters, snappy dialogue, nicely inserted references to past relationships, conspiracy - are clearly more than coincidences for Kate, though not to anyone else. Love the superbly researched, crisp plot-line, complete with subtle hints, and a smashing ending. I have to read the other Home Town Murders.

Kate returns to her small hometown to lick her wounds. Her husband has PTSD and it is not safe for her to live with him. She intends to stay with her aunt and uncle, but arrives in time for her uncle's funeral. It appears he has suffered a heart attack.

Kate is a school teacher. She is going to be a �CSI intern in Scarborough for the summer. Nothing ever happens in this town so it should be slow paced summer.

No sooner has Kate attended her uncle's funeral when 4 teenagers die of overdoses. That is closely followed by a failed suicide attempt and another heart attack.

Can Kate help her ex-boyfriend, Tim get to the bottom of these suspicious deaths?

Excellent Read!

When life at home becomes unsafe for science teacher Kate Hamilton, she returns to the small southwestern Virginia town of her youth to complete a forensic internship. Unfortunately, not everyone is glad to see her. She teams up with former boyfriend, now detective Tim and they begin to investigate a string of deaths, most suspicious, including the death of her Uncle Owen, a Vietnam veteran. As the scenes heat up and become more complex, Quinn does a masterful job in moving her reader through a myriad of possibilities, carefully weaving plot lines to keep the reader guessing. All in all, MINE is a great read, with clear, crisp writing, well-developed caracters and pacing to keep the reading turning pages! Highly recommended. An excellent read. Thank you, Fiona Quinn!

A wonderful book of tremendously beautiful portraits of elephants and other wild animals. Looking through the pages you cannot help but feel for the future of these magnificent creatures. All credit to Nick for the fantastic work he is doing in Africa, he should be supported.
Unfortunately the same can't be said for Amazon.com who didn't send the 2014 edition as described, and instead sent an earlier edition poorly packaged that arrived with dents and scores in the front cover.

so amazing, so beautiful those pictures are

A piece of art work, so amazing, so beautiful those pictures are. It's not only a Must-buy books about wildlife animals' life but also a great book for B&W photography. The stories behind these creatures are sad and horrible, but it also remind and push us to face the problems of poaching. Save these animals, not just for them and for us, but also for our future and children.

Nick Brandt has captured the most heart wrenching documentation of man's cruelty-arrogance and greed. To think that we as humans have ravaged what has been created- created without any human interaction. These photos capture what is wild- what is beautiful- and what we as the " superior race" have and continue to ravage. What right do we have to eradicate these majestic animals? I ask myself that everyday. This is the point where we as a race have evolved. I am ashamed of our evolution.
This book represents a deep love and appreciation for these magnificent animals and I hope will cause some soul searching to those who are privileged to view it. This endeavor by Nick Brandt will serve as an everlasting testament of respect and gratitude for this cause- for all of us to come to the realization that we have no right to kill -what was meant to share this planet with us.
