A Great Introduction to Trading and Technical Analysis

This book is a great introduction to trading and technical analysis. The author explains the technical analysis patterns, and more importantly, the financial psychology behind those patterns. He explains how supply and demand, and the human behavior of greed and fear create those patterns.
The only shortcoming is that there isn't much material on the other important aspects of trading like money management, position sizing, risk management, system testing / validation. For that, you would still need a book like Van K. Tharp's "Trade your Way to Financial Freedom" or Marcel Link's "High Probability Trading". I would have rated this 4 and 1/2 stars if there was such a rating. Worth more than 4 stars, but not quite 5 stars.
Overall, this book is a great primer, and would still be a very good value at twice the price.

A great trading primer!

Great combination of broad overview, and specific analytical techniques. I powered through this book in a few days...partly to quench my newfound thirst for daytrading education, and partly because it is so well written and easy to read.
It wasn't dumbed down and it wasn't too technical. Good for beginner to intermediate trader. This is NOT a complete trading guide by any means, but it is a wonderful overview. If you want a lot of theory, this is not the book. The author recommends books on certain topics if you want to expand your knowledge (apparently there is an entire book devoted to candlestick charts).

Great beginners book

Over the past few years, i have been on a quest to learn as much as I possibly can about the stock market (all facets). Self educating can be difficult, especially if you do not know where to start. This is the first book about the stock market I ever read. I was able to take away from this book a plethora of information and put it to good use. As a newbie in the vast complicated world of trading and investing, I find this book easy to comprehend and feel that it is a valuable tool for beginners.

An Erotic Futuristic Romance Novel

From the back: Reuel is tall, dark and dangerous. His is the face that launched a million flyers. He is the first of his kind, the first cyborg to go rogue, the leader of all who'd come after him. The only rogue nobody has ever come close to catching. Fromt he moment Dalia first sets eyes on him, she knows she is lost. She can no more resist his dark allure that she can cease to breathe.

Dalia is also a cyborg. Manufactured from a different group than Reuel. The cyborgs start to humanize and their creators want them destroyed. Reuel's mission in life is to help save the cyborgs who want a new life for themselves without the control of their creators. He saves Dalia when she is trying to escape. Dalia awakens on a examining table to find a med tech sticking a lethal injection in her neck. He informs her that she is pregnant and must be destroyed. PREGNANT???? Cyborgs don't get pregnant or do they? You will be surprised to find out who the daddy is. Dalia is wisked away to the new safe planet were the rule on the planet is to mate with no less than two cyborgs and no more than four. The ratio of males to females is four to one. Not only will she have to deal with a baby she has to mate with her lover and her best friend Pierce.

This book contains the same concepts and characters as Cyborg. Another book which I have read and reviewed. I enjoyed both books. I disagree with the other reviewer that this book was a waste. I guess, sex, threesomes,and bondage are not her taste.

If you are reading books published by Ellora's Cave, New Concepts Publishing or Erotictales then you should already know what you are getting yourself into. I would pay $11.00 dollars all day and have.

Fascinating world.

I do love this series, see my reviews for Cyborg and Cyborg Nation for the back story.
This is actually the first story of this series (I read it backwards and still loved it!) -- the story of Reuel and Dalia. The Cyborgs are trying to create their own civilization and Dalia is now pregnant with the first Cyborg offspring. The Cyborgs were bred with no feelings, and the Hunters were cyborgs given artificial memories to make them believe they were human. When Dalia finds out she's really not human and has been killing her own kind, she's devastated. Then she's scared of what may be gestating within her. What if she can't learn maternal feelings? What kind of offspring is it? Nobody knows as it's never been done! How can she choose between Reuel, the father (DNA donor) of her offspring, and Pierce, her buddy and friend from her earlier life? And with the uneven male/female ratio of the Cyborg Nation, will she have to choose?

I really do love this series. The scenes of labor and delivery are hysterical and are alone worth the cost of the book!! And how Dalia contrives to share offspring duties and lovemaking duties is a treat of Solomonic proportions. Don't miss this fascinating series...you may even want to read them in order! I plan to go back in a couple of months and do so...

I was disapointed with this book. The plot line was interesting in the Production Review and I was on a Sci Fi trip after reading Laurann Dohner Cyborg series (which I Loved) I thought why not try this. I felt the plot line was there for the book but the writing and dialogue were lacking big time. Its one of those books where you feel like you could have done a better job writing it. I just wanted more. Not the length but better dialogue with the charchters and more depth to the storyline especially since it's the first book of the series. I finished this book thinking it could have been so much more which left me disapointed.

An interesting period piece

The most interesting aspect of the new edition is the recent forward by Philip Johnson (1995). In it he humorously describes his relationship with "The International Style," and how dated the book now appears. He also notes that it was Alfred Barr who introduced Hitchcock and him to this new world of architecture. It was Barr who had written extensively on the subject and dubbed it an "International Style."
Not surprisingly, nearly all the buildings included in this catalog for the 1932 MoMA exhibit date from 1927. This was a pivotal year in the Modern Movement. Le Corbusier's "Toward a New Architecture" first appeared in English. The new improved Bauhaus opened its doors in Dessau, in Gropius' newly constructed complex. The International Competition for the League of Nations building was held with Le Corbusier losing out on a technicality. A building exhibition, laid out by Mies van der Rohe, was sponsored by the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart. Modern Architecture had come of age.
The selections are interesting for their range of architects but have several notable omissions. Among them Rudolf Schindler, who dismissed the idea of an "International Style," in a letter to Johnson. Modern architects then and now hate the idea of a "style," believing their works to be based on a set of constructive and compositional principles which transcend the notion of style.
Nevertheless, the name stuck. Hitchcock and Johnson are widely credited for bringing the International Style to America, even though some early works by Neutra, Hood, Howe and Lescaze were included in the exhibition. Most importantly, Johnson lured Mies to America, where he would achieve his most lofty aspirations. The book makes for an interesting read but has long been superceded by more insightful and penetrating books on the subject.

an essential historical account caught in time.

As always, Hitchcock is a captivating and insightful writer of architecture. Very good reading for an American centric perspective on how European modernism was re-packaged and made presentable to American sensibilities (the pragmatist vs. the political). Interesting that Wright is excluded from the 'group' yet the Euros of the day acknowledge his influence in development of their ideas.
Also really good follow-up articles in the Feb 1982 issue of Progressive Architecture.

About the Author

Although she began by writing fantasy, Nancy Kress currently writes science fiction, most usually about genetic engineering. She teaches regularly at summer conferences such as Clarion, and during the year at the Bethesda Writing Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In addition, she is the "Fiction" columnist for Writer's Digest magazine. She has won two Nebulas and a Hugo, and lost over a dozen more of these awards. Her work has been translated into Swedish, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, among others.

good practical advice on fiction writing from a pro

This is part of the Writer's Digest "Elements of Fiction" series (presumably the previous incarnation of their current "Write Great Fiction" series). This book is thus a kind of counterpart to James Scott Bell's Plot and Structure. Whereas Bell approaches the subject as a college tutor might, analyzing classic plot structures and using diagrams to illustrate the rhythm of a story, Kress's approach is more down-to-earth. It's also a shorter book. (I see the two approaches as complementary.) As the title implies, she looks at these three parts of a novel or story and offers clear advice about what each needs to accomplish and how to go about it.

A key idea running through this book is that the beginning makes a promise to the reader: not about exactly how the story will turn out, but about what kind of reading experience it will deliver. An interesting middle builds on that, and a satisfying ending delivers on the promise.

When I read this book, I got a solid picture of what Kress as a writer thinks about as she works on a story and (to a degree) how she works. There's interesting discussion about whether or not to revise the beginning and perfect it before moving on, and always an eye toward the reader (or editor) and what they will need to see at each point in the piece to make it work for them. For this reason, Kress puts a spotlight on the very beginning (opening lines or paragraphs) and very ending, since these are places that will sink and entire work if they're not effective. When talking about middles, she addresses the common experience of feeling stuck or overwhelmed by a writing project.

A refreshing feature of this book is that Kress frequently gives advice tailored to the short story form, not focusing exclusively on novels as many writing books do. This is important because in many genres, short stories are how beginning writers learn their craft and begin to market their work.

Because the focus of this book is not narrowly on plot per se, but about "beginnings, middles, and ends" as an organizing frame for teaching how to write well, it can serve passably well as a one-stop book on fiction writing. There's information here on dialog, incorporating detail and exposition, establish setting and tone, etc.

Invaluable!

This book, along with "Plot" by Ansen Dibbell and "Description" by Monica Wood are my favorites of the "Elements of Fiction" series by Writer's Digest Books.
Nancy Kress gives a clear and concise guide to keeping your momentum going when beginning a novel or short story. She offers practical advice on most, if not all, areas of fiction writing (e.g. characterization, plots, style). Best of all, she does all of this in an encouraging manner that makes you believe you *can* get through and eventually write the story you've envisioned in your mind.
I find her approach extremely helpful and as a result, I ended up buying her book on "Dynamic Characters" as well. I only wish she could write more fiction technique books!

How to turn an okay manuscript into a winner

I read this book when I was revising a manuscript. Nancy Kress shows how to make all the parts of a novel connect to provide a satisfactory reading experience. Her section on endings was particularly strong, and helped to transform my last page from merely so-so to five paragraphs that sum up the message of the story in a powerful and readable piece of exposition and dialogue. This book is ideal if your unruly story is escaping from your control, or if it doesn't deliver its message with the power you know it could. Helpful for the beginning novelist who needs assistance shaping a story as well as for the experienced novelist who wants to increase his or her mastery in the craft of writing.

The IB physics bible

This book is probably the best resources you can get for IB physics. It is tailored to the IB syllabus and contains nothing more than what you need for the exam. This book is especially useful if your teacher does not teach, or somehow decides not to teach according to the syllabus. Also, it is a must for people who want to do well but are not willing to read through 500 pages of their textbook before the exam. For me, it certainly contributed to my 7 in physics HL, and I know it is probably go to do the same for you.

I liked it because instead of several paragraphs of essay style writing contained in a regular textbook, this book gives a more concise visual approach and uses many diagrams and boxes with text inside to explain concepts. If you are SL or HL Physics, I strongly recomend this book.

This book is AMAZING

This book is the best thing you could buy for the IB Physics test. It has all the information you need for every single topic. And it goes in order. Nothing is left out. The text looks intimidating at first, but once you start reading and highlighting, it becomes so easy. I used this book to study for my IB physics SL test, and I got a 7. Oh yeah, and for one of my options, I studied a topic my teacher never taught in class. I learned it all myself from the book. So that just goes to show how good it is. I higly recommend this book to anyone that wants to score high on this test. I also bought the IB Biology book, and so far it's helping me a great deal just for tests and quizzes.

Acentech is an multidisciplinary acoustical consulting firm more than 50 years' old, with offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Thousand Oaks, California. Acentech senior consultant James P. Cowan, principal author of this book, has extensive experience in architectural acoustics and environmental noise issues and has managed hundreds of projects across the country. He conducts seminars and teaches classes on acoustical topics for the American Institute of Architects and other associations, municipalities, educational institutions, and firms. He is a board-certified noise control engineer and the author of Handbook of Environmental Acoustics, Architectural Acoustics, a CD-ROM, and many educational articles on acoustical topics.

less than I expected

Based on the pedigree of the authors and price of the book I expected more information. Is there need for another introduction to acoustics?

The sections on Tools and Examples did not provide enough information for me. In some ways these chapters read like an article written in a trade maagzine. IE,'.. the facility had this issue ___, we did ___ and everyone is happy now....'

I hoped to find more detail on the analyses of an acoustical problem, and detail on why and how a solution was determined.

So if this is a single text introduction to architectural acoustics it's OK. I think Architectural Acoustics by Mehta, Johnson & Rocafort, Marshall Long (see my review), or Acoustics and Noise Control for Architects and Builders by Irvine and Richards are more informative and a better value.

A basic acoustic introduction

This book is easy to read with many practical examples described in simple basic acoustical or structural terms. It is a very good place to start for those who are just beginning but for those with experience or previous training it offers little technical or detailed information nor acoustical equations. As a basic overview it is fine and the resource section is very useful.
