New to DO178B/C... first book to read!

Good book to get started on DO178-B/C. Good practical advice to help control costs when executing projects. If you are new to DO178B/C. This is the first book to read! Once you have completed this book, I recommend Developing Safety-Critical Software by Leanna Rierson for in-depth information on the DO178B/C objectives.

Wishing I'd read this book sooner!!

I appreciate Vance Hilderman's book very much. Recently I was involved in a Level B DO 178 B/C certification project. Unfortunately, I came on the scene when much work had already been done, or, more appropriately, attempted. I was brought in to do the requirements management, only, none of the up front planning had been completed our approved by their DER. Yet, the software engineer was busily writing code and working on UML models while engineering was building a system and testing it in the lab. So, I tried to get everybody working on the planning documents first and to follow the process. it was like they were approaching the project from the middle outwards.
The DER that the company had hired have us a 3 day overview of the planning process a couple of weeks after I arrived on the scene, but, that was the only time I ever saw him. The QA manager spoke to him and we had a few telephone conferences with him, but, that was it. While I was there, we were never able to get any of the planning documents approved and it seemed like we were just spinning our wheels. I did manage to get input from the engineering department and marketing on a specification for the battery system and got the company to purchase CRADLE for the requirements management. Also, I tried to identify some high level requirements and get them into a document. But, had we read Vance's book first, I'm certain many of the problems we were having could have been avoided and we would have been successful.
