About the Author
Gary Conner has over 25 years of manufacturing experience with 15 years dedicated to implementing lean manufacturing in companies of all sizes, from mom-and-pop shops with 10 workers to multinational corporations with 15,000 or more employees.

In his consultancy, Lean Enterprise Training (Newport, Ore.), he has worked in 14 different industries, contracted with over 120 different companies, and facilitated over 400 kaizen projects, training tens of thousands of people in skills such as value stream mapping, setup reduction, 5S, team building, six sigma, and facilities layout planning.

An accomplished ISO 9000 certified lead auditor, Gary is also a college instructor and has authored four textbooks related to world-class manufacturing. In 2002, Gary's first edition of this book, Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop, received the distinguished Shingo Prize Award. He was also awarded Manufacturer of the Year in 2004 by Chapter 63 of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Great read- but not quite a one-size-fits-all

Overall, very good read. The author talks about the benefits of leaning-out a shop, but the risks of trying to take it too far in a smaller shop. He also does a fantastic job discussing the human element of running a production shop.

My complaints are that it is somewhat machine-shop oriented, the software is no longer hosted on his website, and in our (primarily one-off) environment, I'm wondering how useful a Lean strategy is, but there wasn't really a diagnostic for that.

I do highly recommend the book. Even if your shop cannot become lean, it has management advice, insight into reducing waste where possible, and a generic-enough scope that at least half of it will be helpful. The target is 100-10,000 product numbers, if I read right, with recurring processes. We just don't have the recurrence to make it quite as useful as it could be. Any shop with consistent work flow would see more value in this book than the 4 stars I gave it.

A Great Introduction to Social Media

Understanding who this book is for and who it is not for will really impact how you benefit from Likeable Social Media. First a few things of note:

1. The book is a quick and easy read with lots of excellent examples
2. There is an excellent introduction to social media for novices
3. The author clearly has mastery of the topic

So, if you are new to social media and are focused on end-user engagement then you will probably really benefit from this book.

However, if you are already using social media and really want to take your strategy to the next level you may want to rely on alternatives. What I was hoping to get from this book was specific strategies on the various social networks highlighted on the cover. Instead, the book was really focused on general social media strategies - listen to your customers, engage, etc. These are all important but anyone engaged in social media tends to understand why it is important. As someone that works in the B2B space I wanted something more tactile such as 'here are some great tools for following trends on twitter' or 'here are ways to get your tweets better noticed' or 'posting on Mondays on Linkedin is a bad idea'. Again, I still got something from the book but it wasn't really what I had hoped for.

The only area I would specifically highlight where the book let me down is the decision to highlight several social networks on the cover and in the title. This led me to believe there would be a discrete discussion on best practices for each network but most warrant passing mentions which left me a little disappointed.

Even useful for people who don't buy social media books anymore ...

In the past five years, I have probably bought more than 50 books about social media. In the past three months, I have hardly purchased one.

Instead, I now rely on a flood of blog posts, ebooks, white papers, and videos to keep me up to date on the latest news and insights about social media. So when I heard Dave was releasing a new second edition of his popular book - I was ready to buy it because I know and like him, but I didn't expect too much more. This book surprised me.

As a fellow believer and writer about the power of likeability in business, I am already inclined to like the underlying message of this book. But I also consider myself fairly critical of most social media "bible" style books. The sad truth is that most are bloated and dated. Likeable Social Media is just the opposite.

What sets this new edition apart is how actionable all the lessons and stories in the book actually are. Dave lives the experiences he talks about and tries all of his advice with his own companies and clients. There's a reason the first edition sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has been translated into 13 languages (so far).

In a space as fast moving as social media - you might be tempted, like me, to think that blog posts and online content is the only real way to stay up to date. This book might prove you wrong.

Overflowing with Durable Strategies

[[VIDEOID:d18a017223acc7600288a7e5b367d8bd]] Our initial assumption might be that a book about social media would become obsolete a month or two after publication, because the social media scene changes so frequently--new regulations, new offerings, and altered procedural steps. However, Dave Kerpen provides, quite clearly and convincingly, a mindset that will remain valid under any circumstances.

Starting out he says: "We all intuitively know what makes some people at cocktail parties interesting and enjoyable to interact with. Yet most companies have not figured out how to be likeable in the cocktail party known as social media." Sadly, "Many companies still act like the sales guy who won't shut up about his products, or someone who tries too hard to dazzle people, or the person who bores everybody to death talking without listening and not asking other people what they want to have a conversation about."

Which leads me to mention what I like most about the book: Kerpen's recurring theme that our purpose online is not to bombard people with our information and instant pitches--but instead to read, hear, and evaluate accurately what our contacts want to hear and need to hear.

A major plus for the book is Kerpen's eagerness to illustrate and document his assertions by referring to companies who are implementing his recommendations: Ann Taylor, Cisco, The Gap, and many others.

Have your highlighter handy when you read the Appendix: "A Refresher Guide to the Social Networks That Matter Most."

I'll put this book in a spot where I can refer to it frequently, and my prediction is you'll do the same thing. To borrow Kerpen's most-used word, this playbook is indeed "likeable."

Excellent overview of oil refining

Very Good overview of petroleum refining. Well written.
I would recommend it, as an introduction text, for every engineer working in an oil refinery.
However, it is not written for process engineers looking a technical book, as the process engineering concepts are not covered and sometimes incorrect.
For example, Leffler states that "the perforations permit the vapors to rise through the column and the liquids to fall" to explain how distillation perforated trays work. Liquid flow through the perforations has to be avoided (this is called "tray dumping").

Excellent intro to Refining

If you are new to Refining, or just curious, this book is an excellent place to start. The author makes the subject very approachable for lay people and engineers new to refining. The books starts out with a description of the physical separation processes of distillation and vacuum flashing, and then moves carefully into the processes that require chemical reactions. No need to be a chemistry whiz; the author keeps the principles understandable. Highly recommend. Now if the publisher would only come out with a Kindle edition!

Deep sea biology by a bio-luminary

This excellent and very readable book sits next to standard deep-sea texts by Tyler, Gage, VanDover and Marshall on my shelf. Peter Herring is one of the most respected pelagic deep-sea biologist in the UK. I get the feeling that this book is a synthesis of the lecture series that he delivered at the University of Cambridge over the last 20 or so years. I have used it as a framework for a 2nd year Biological Oceanography module and have found that each chapter is a great platform for a single session.

It is an ideal text book for an undergraduate course but also a fantastic introduction to deep-sea biology to anyone encountering the field for the first time.

This is a great book; however, the quality of the kindle version is not great. Kindle quality should not be so hit and miss; especially at that price! Buy the book, not the kindle edition.

Roger Kaufman is Professor Emeritus, Florida State University, and Director of Roger Kaufman & Associates. He is also Distinguished Research Professor at the Sonora Institute of Technology. His PhD is in communications from New York University. He consults with public and private organizations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and Europe. He is a Certified Performance Technologist and a Diplomate in School Psychology and a Fellow in Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He has been recognized by the ASTD for Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance. Dr. Kaufman has published 39 books and more than 256 articles on strategic planning, performance improvement, quality management and continuous improvement, needs assessment, management, and evaluation.

For over 40 years Jerry Herman has been creating landmarks in show-business history, shows like Hello, Dolly!, Mame, Mack and Mabel, and La Cage aux Folles. His music and lyrics for Broadway shows have won him Tony awards, Grammy awards, Gold Records, honors for best lyricist, and a Drama Desk award. He is the quintessential composer-lyricist. He lives in Hollywood, California.

While I don't recommend paying more than $40 or $50
for this book compiled by copywriting uber-mensch
Lewis, it's as good as the other 2 or 3 books in the
category.

Buy the ones you can get by Hatch and Hodgeson,
and pick this one up someday.

There's a book by Harlan Kilstein of his own internet
sales letters that is pretty good and another one
called "Hall of Fame" published by AWAI that can
be had for very little money. All mentioned books
are swipe-files for good sales letters.

Do you want to learn to write better sales pieces for your own personal use? Check out a copy at your local library.

The five pages listed in chapter two contain sales/writing wisdom that will save you decades of "grief" and massively increase your income. The 446 pages after that are a literal smorgasbord of writing ideas and techniques - a literal swipe file - that you can extract out, modify as appropriate and put to work for your own benefit.

It's as simple as this. I've spent thousands of dollars for the "big name" copywriters programs. This book will give you a better education and better examples than many of their programs will.

Object-Role Modeling (ORM) is a fact-based approach to data modeling that expresses the information requirements of any business domain simply in terms of objects that play roles in relationships. All facts of interest are treated as instances of attribute-free structures known as fact types, where the relationship may be unary (e.g. Person smokes), binary (e.g. Person was born on Date), ternary (e.g. Customer bought Product on Date), or longer. Fact types facilitate natural expression, are easy to populate with examples for validation purposes, and have greater semantic stability than attribute-based structures such as those used in Entity Relationship Modeling (ER) or the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

All relevant facts, constraints and derivation rules are expressed in controlled natural language sentences that are intelligible to users in the business domain being modeled. This allows ORM data models to be validated by business domain experts who are unfamiliar with ORM's graphical notation. For the data modeler, ORM's graphical notation covers a much wider range of constraints than can be expressed in industrial ER or UML class diagrams, and thus allows rich visualization of the underlying semantics.

Suitable for both novices and experienced practitioners, this book covers the fundamentals of the ORM approach. Written in easy-to-understand language, it shows how to design an ORM model, illustrating each step with simple examples. Each chapter ends with a practical lab that discusses how to use the freeware NORMA tool to enter ORM models and use it to automatically generate verbalizations of the model and map it to a relational database.

Dr Terry Halpin is internationally recognized as the leading authority on ORM. Currently a data modeling consultant and a Professor in Computer Science, he has many years of experience in developing and teaching data modeling technology in both industry and academia. He has authored over 200 technical publications and eight books, and has co-edited nine books on information systems modeling research. He is a an associate editor or reviewer for several academic journals, is a regular columnist for the Business Rules Journal, and is a recipient of the DAMA International Achievement Award for Education and the IFIP Outstanding Service Award.

A Must Read for 2015!

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I first came across Mike Craven when I read his collection if short stories in “Assume Nothing, Believe Nobody, Challenge Everything”. That book was brilliant and I wondered if the author could deliver another cracking read. Well I am more than happy to say that he could and he did!

Born In A Burial Gown was extraordinary! The storyline itself was cleverly written and slowly revealed. The subtle build up of suspense left me holding my breath as each chapter ended with a little more of the story revealed. The story hooks you from the start. You immediately start wondering what the crime is about as it is not delivered to you on a plate. I personally love the challenge of trying to figure out the case/mystery as I go along and I already had my “crime-solving” head on within the first few pages of this book.

We are once again introduced to Cumbria’s FMIT (Force Major Investigation Team) with DI Avison Fluke as the lead. At times, Fluke reminds me a bit of Rebus — he does not tolerate fools and expects 100% from those he works with. You get a much deeper insight into Fluke and his team in this story and I really enjoyed that. I began to visualise what each character looked liked and the quirks that make them who they are.

The descriptions of places, people and the crime(s) were well written. I particularly loved the description of Fluke’s home in this book…so much so that I want to live there myself!! I also enjoyed learning the meaning of the title when it was revealed in the book. I had heard it before but the significance it has for the story works perfectly and is revealed at just the right time in the story.

If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing right until the very end well this is the book for you! I highly recommend this book and think it will be one that stays with me for some time. Well done Mr Craven on such a mind-blowing read!

Craven is a Crazy Good Writer and Storyteller Particularly for those who like to learn along the way.

This author knows how to write and how to tell a story. It was refreshing to read an author who can pull the quality of seemingly yesteryear touches of the literary into a contemporary story all within a setting, the UK Lake District which enthralls. I particularly enjoyed the easy learning while the story unfolded. I learned about breeders, bareback, ambient temperature and an old style chart named Henssge Nomogram; but with the latter now out of date with contemporary electronics. On this last, the author delights us with a contemporary voice which says "He probably had an app for it."

A nice twist to an old tale

This was a really good story and I think one of the best TG writers on Amazon Kindle. Really professional writing style with a nice twist on the "Freaky Friday" tale. Spoilers follow....

The two make "Freaky Friday" wishes that the other experience what they were going through. The wish comes true and the daughter wakes up in her father's body back in time when he was a teenager. He wakes up in hers in the present. His present original male body is in a coma in the hospital. The dad in his daughter's body begins a romance but eventually the man in the coma wakes up and they change back to normal.

I was hoping that the "dad" in the coma would wake up and we'd find out they were still switched (i.e. with the daughter still in his body). Though there is a time-loop possibility there I think when concerning wishes this could have somehow been explained as "that was still her wish" so she could have simply time-hopped back to the present and resumed her father's life. This would have made the daughter-boyfriend romance a little more interesting from a TG point of view in my opinion, especially if they became stuck that way with no going back. The question remains then, would the daughter have made a better father? We never find that out unfortunately. If we had I'm sure I would have rated this a five instead of a four but that's just personal plot preference. Up until the switch back the book is certainly a five for quality story telling but I was left a little dissatisfied with the ending. Still everyone's back to normal at the end so, like "Freaky Friday" the characters can use the experience as a way to better understand the other.

All in all an excellent read and one of the best I've found on Amazon Kindle.

What can I say

I will seem redundant in my comments, but all Tania Allen's books are uncannily similar in plot and characters. Excellent and heartfelt writing which is always makes for an enjoyable read. I just wish she had a better proofreader. Other than this one minor flaw she is my favorite author.

Amazing and dissappointing.

This really is a great easy short read. I highly recommend it if you are interested in a primary first hand account of being in the trenches of WWI. The author was a quite a hero in WWII. I will say it's amazingly disappointing as it ends terribly abruptly when he becomes ill so I didn't get as much as I wanted but that doesn't take away from whats there. There is no post war commentary or anything from that author as this was published long after he was killed by the Gestapo.
