Must Read for Architects and CIOs

Jason's book is well worth the read. It's thought provoking and will challenge many belief systems you currently have about Enterprise IT. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the first 2 chapters ramble on a bit about complex systems, the points are very valid but it takes a little to long to get there. After those chapters however the book picks up the pace and gets at the heart of the current "revolution", as Jason calls it, that we are in the midst of experiencing. I firmly believe that architects and CIOs that read this and sort of grasp what Jason is saying about agility will be far better off than the vast majority. If you are trying to understand what REST is really about beyond the religious arguments, what true cloud computing is really about and how all of this is evolving at a very rapid pace then I highly recommend this book.
Predicting the future of IT has always been a difficult chore but I think Jason's view is pretty spot on for this point in time. Agility is the center of it all but it goes well beyond just speed.

Slow start, strong finish

I found the first half of the book informative but not particularly persuasive. It seemed choppy, like a series of stand-alone blog articles stitched together. However, the patient reader is rewarded once REST is under the microscope. Don't let the first part discourage. The book gains traction as one reads; be patient!

An iconoclastic view on Enterprise Architecture that makes total sense and is very 21st century

Jason Bloomberg, known for his ZapThink blog posts, has been able to write a book on Enterprise Architecture as it should be perceived by decision-makers.
He outlines a rather iconoclastic view on an SOA as it benefits the business goals for any enterprise that is facing competition in the market place. Sometimes hard to grasp unless you've hit the brick wall yourself, the book goes from business requirement of being agile as an enterprise to utilizing RESTful webservices and the Cloud.
Apart from the chapter on SOA at the start of the book, he manages to write towards a broad audience that is not technical perse. Yet, the book is highly interesting for techies as well.
I think this book is a must read for any architect, business or IT, as well as CIO's and (business) line-management.
