Patton Oswalt is the author of the New York Times bestseller Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. He has released four TV specials and four critically acclaimed comedy albums, including the Grammy-nominated My Weakness Is Strong. He put together the Comedians of Comedy tour and television series. Oswalt has also appeared on many television shows and in more than twenty films, including Young Adult, Big Fan, and Ratatouille. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Great look at a film addiction with a lot of filler

Not your garden variety celeb tell-all memoir about addiction, Patton Oswalt's Silver Screen Fiend tells about his crippling addiction to film.

As an ex-sprocket fiend myself, I loved reading about someone who considered seeing five films in a day normal. Oswalt's second memoir (haven't read his first, Zombie Spaceship Wasteland) uses a structure of several Night Café moments—instances of revelation; figurative (and literal) rooms one enters and leave a changed man.

From seeing Nosferatu (1922) at five years old in a library run by idiots, to making one comedian laugh during his first abysmal five-minute set at a comedy club, to bombing in a room full of comics and wanting to be an artist, to visiting the New Beverly Cinema and wanting to be a director!

The book is a quick read but don't expect a lot of jokes—this isn't your garden variety comedian's memoir either. There are a lot of references to both cult films and classics (I'm gonna try to cue up a specific scene from Apollo 13) with some tame looks behind the curtain that is Hollywood/TV (stories from the set of Down Periscope or the pilot taping of The King of Queens) but nothing too shocking (one chapter is written about a comedian I'd like to see more of—his style sounds intriguing—but the chapter uses a pseudonym because he kinda comes across as "Misguided" (p. 146).)

The novel did make me miss the years where I saw over 200 films in theaters (not counting movies on TV or DVD) which is probably the exact opposite feeling Oswalt would want to create in his readers. His fifth Night Café was the birth of his daughter. No longer does he want to waste time in "flickering movie temple[s]" when "the wide-angle world" (p. 185) has so much more, but I suppose I haven't completely squashed that sprocket fiend demon living in my head...

Thirty-four pages (over 15% of the book!) are dedicated to listing every film he watched over the main 4 years he wrote about. I skimmed these pages looking for a few notes written in certain sections, but seriously, what a waste of ink. Another 12 pages in the one epilogue are dedicated to a fictional, beyond-the-grave film festival he created for a friend who passed away in 2007. It was fun to read about these films that never were and imagine what could have been and the section reminded me about how awesome Flicker by Theodore Roszak was.

Overall, it was a decent read but felt like it was quickly put together with a lot of filler to make a certain page or word count...

A Great Story with a Big But...

Patton Oswalt's wit and catholic knowledge of American entertainment culture ooze out of every sentence in this fun book. He handles his story of breaking into comedy and his descent into film addiction with clarity and insight that isn't lost among the jokes and references. The major complaint I have about this book is its deceptive length and price. When the story and epilogue end, you'll notice your Kindle telling you you've only read about 65% of the content of your e-book. However, what remains is simply a long, exhaustive list of all the movies Oswalt watched during the years covered by the book. It takes up the balance of the page count and inflates the overall apparent "value" of the purchase price. You don't get a 300-page book here, folks. It's much shorter but padded with extras that won't add to the story for anyone but the reader who seeks to re-create Oswalt's binge watching film-for-film.

Different but Good

I really didn't know what to expect from this book. I read his first book and loved it, but I wasn't expecting another memoir. That's really what this book is, a memoir of his obsession with movies. I guess the title should have clued me in. It took a bit but as I understood better where he was going with this book I began to really enjoyed. I loved his retelling of the Karate Kid. It alone makes any price you paid for this book worth it. So does the short story included about the vampire couple. Perhaps what I'm getting at is that maybe Patton should tackle fiction in his next book.

Wrath of an angry god

I strongly recommend reading the first two books of this trilogy first.

By now we have seen that the lion-like Raknii people have to improve and update their space fleet, as humans have superior weaponry. But the Raknii are superior in numbers and have a predatory mentality. This book tests whether there can be common ground between the warring factions.

Halbert the sentient computer has learned a lot from his human friend Dieter and is working on making himself mobile by such means as illegal clones and cyborgs. He still wants to be able to tap into any computer in the galaxy.

I enjoyed a new Raknii female who is the despair of her father, too contrary and self-possessed for any male to offer to marry her. The albino admiral Drix decides that he could not do better in a wife and offers for her paw, though it must be said he values her connections equally. At the same time this lady N'raal is a product of her society which does not educate women or expect them to fight, unlike humankind where we see female senior politicians and admirals among the list.

There are fewer battle scenes than in the earlier books, but when the humans are using hollowed out asteroids as mobile battle platforms, the results are spectacular. Also we get little fun or quirky items, great characterisation, some genuine romance and a couple of weddings. What more do you need in a space war series?

An excellent conclusion to the series.

This was a most excellent conclusion to this trilogy, there were some points were it did drag, however it soon picked the pace back up and there were epic battles. Yes some of these plot lines we have seen before on the other hand Gibson did an excellent job in weaving them together for a great story. I was happy to see the Admiral and boobs survive and thrive as I was saddened by the loss of JT. I suspected back in book 1 that Bat had a relationship with Bozo aka Hal that he was hiding. A job well done Gibson.

Loved the series and I want MORE!

I've read the whole series and loved it. Lots of battles for us military SF fans, but overall, I really loved the characters, both alien and human, and the humor just kept the series fun and easy to read. For me, these were pure entertainment, which is what I look for. I sincerely hope the author will return to the series and write more!

About the Author
Camille Bateman Haight, was born and raised in Sandy, Utah. She was born the fourth child in a family with eight children. “I grew up in a loving home full of great people. She was encouraged to read books on her summer vacations, and write a book report on each one. Her father pushed her to learn new vocabulary words regularly to further her foundation. Her grandmother also had that same love of classic novels and poetry she read to young children at elementary schools and loved to read to all her grandchildren. Her love and influence just added to Camille’s fondness of good story telling. Her love of a good story can be seen within each chapter of her books. “A good story should pull at you from within, and bring forth a bond between you and the Characters as if they truly are you best friend or most hated foe. A good story will make you laugh out loud, or have tears slipping down your cheeks. A story should feel real, and engage you on every level,” Says Camille. Today Camille lives in southern Utah with her husband and young children, where she continues to pour herself into her stories. “I will write until I have nothing left, or until my fingers give up on me.” She said, knowing that for her, a good story is at the core of so many of life’s memorable moments.

Great Read! Can't wait for book 2!

This book has an amazing way of drawing you in. You feel like you are right there with the characters as they unwrap the intriguing mystery that surrounds Collett. It forges new friendships, kindles a romance within your heart, and holds you in suspense and terror with a shocking conclusion. I can't wait to see what comes next from C. B. Haight

Loved The Story Line

You can't help but fall in love with each of the characters and get swept away by the story. Its one of those that you hate to see it end and are eager for the release of the next book.

Forgotten Enemy by C.B. Haight is the first book in a series called The Powers of Influence. Cade is a werewolf and part of an organization entirely focused on protecting people from paranormal threats. When Roderick, one of his close friends and ally, asks that Cade look into one of Roderick’s employees, Cade is enthralled by his charge for protection. Collett is a seemingly skittish woman who doesn’t remember any of her past and is on the run for her life. �Creatures of evil regularly track her down and attempt to kill her and Collett doesn’t even know why. Cade, Roderick and his family work together to both keep Collett safe, but also figure out who she is. Collett is also slowly discovering powers that have been lying hidden and, on top of everything else, she must figure out how to manage these powers and determine what they might mean. �Together, they all must figure out who is hunting Collett and why. As the clues begin to fall into place, Cade and Collett also work to cope with their quickly changing relationship.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a little slow in terms of the action, but this allows the reader to savor the characters and the growing relationships. The romance grew organically and I really liked that. There were a lot of characters, but they all added something to the story in terms of actions or just information about the relationship between all the characters. I also liked that in addition to Cade and Collett’s point of views, the reader gets the point of view of the predator. It helps build up to the revelation near the end of the story, which I really liked. However, I really disliked how the story ends. Because the plot moves a little slowly and there are going to be more books in the series, the main mystery of the story was never resolved. Some information was revealed to at least keep the story going, but I really wish there was more. It almost felt as if the characters were really in the same place that they were at the beginning of the story. �This is frustrating because the slow pace and development of relationships can really cause the reader to become attached to the characters and how their lives progress.

The narration by Mikeal Narramore was pretty good. I did sometimes have a difficult time keeping track of who was speaking because some of the characters sounded similar, but over all he did a good job. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good long lasting mystery and paranormal romances.

About the Author
"Stephen P. Robbins" received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for the Shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company. Since completing his graduate studies, Dr. Bobbins has taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. Dr. Bobbins' research interests have focused on conflict, power, and politics in organizations, as well as the development of effective interpersonal skills. His articles on these and other topics have appeared in such journals as "Business Horizons," the "California Management Review, Business and Economic Perspectives, International Management, Management Review, Canadian Personnel and Industrial Relations," and the "Journal of Management Education."

In recent years, Dr. Bobbins has been spending most of his professional time writing textbooks. Before completing her graduate work, she held different jobs including high school teacher, legal assistant, and government program planner. She has taught at Drury University, the University of Arkansas, Trinity University, and since 1983, at Southwest Missouri State University. Dr. Coulter's research interests have focused on competitive strategies for not-for-profit arts organizations and the use of new media in the educational process. Her research on these and other topics has appeared in such journals as "Journal of Business Strategies, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Nonprofit and Public Sector Marketing, International Journal of Business Disciplines," and "Case Research Journal." In addition to "Management," Dr. Coulter has published two other books with Prentice Hall, "Strategic Management in Action," Second Edition, and "Entrepreneurship in Action." When she's not busy teaching or writing, she enjoys puttering around in her flower gardens, playing the piano, readingall different types of books, and enjoying many different activities with husband Ron and daughters Sarah and Katie.

Just finished the class with this book. WHAT A TOTAL RIP OFF. It taught me nothing useful, cost was three times more than other publishers, and access codes are a challenge if you want to be able to let someone else use it. Pearson is a complete waste of money and schools are all in bed with them just waiting to suck the cash out of our pockets. The first lesson we get in business management is what a rip off the education system is when it comes to books. Especially, the over priced Pearson ones.

great overview on extremes and the extreme value distributions

The theory of extremes and related topics of outlier detection are near and dear to me. My Ph.D. thesis dealt with special stationary sequences and how Gnedenko's three type theorem extended from the i.i.d. case to stationary sequences. Also after getting my Ph.D. I went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory where I continued to do research on extremes and focused on the problem of outlier detection and its relation to data validation.
There have been a number of theoretical books on the theory of extremes. Gumbel's was the first and it was also considered very practical. Galambos and Leadbetter,Lindgren and Rootzen are the landmark theoretical books that extend the theory. Castillo wrote a book for engineers and in recent years there have been additional books of a theoretical nature but with applications to finance or hydrology etc.

This book is a reference for engineers and others that may want to use the distributions and apply the methods. It is also useful to the extreme value theorists like myself.

Kotz has always been known for his ability to characterize and provide historical accounts for probability distributions. His volumes with Norman Johnson are famous. This book is up to his high standards. Chapter 1 provides a thorough and accurate historical account of the development of the theory of univariate extremes. Chapter 2 provides information on the family of generalized extreme value distributions. Finally Chapter 3 covers the theory and distributions for multivariate extremes along with applications. This is followed by a large and extensive bibliography. Although my own work is not mentioned directly in this book it can be found in some of the references including Castillo (1988) and Leadbetter, Lindgren and Rootzen (1983).

Too many errors and omissions

This book is a broad survey of both univariate and multivariate extreme value distributions. The target reader is someone who wants quick access to results so the book has no proofs, although there are motivating theoretical discussions in the first chapter. This book has considerable overlap with a chapter in Kotz's book: Continuous Univariate Distributions, Vol. 2. The book is thin (too thin for such a vast subject) with only three chapters. There are no worked problems or sample data sets, so the person wanting a tutorial work should look elsewhere. This book is primarily a reference work, not a text, or a monograph. Unfortunately, there are a number of annoying errors and omissions. For example, on page 23 (section 1.7.1 Moment Estimation) the moment equations for sigma and mu reversed. In chapter 2, which covers generalized extreme value distributions, the authors reference Castillo and Hadi (1997), but this reference is missing from the bibliography. Too bad, as this is an essential reference for the chapter because as it gives a good method for estimating the parameters of a generalized extreme value distribution. Although there is a section on Bayesian inference, try looking up "Bayes" or "Bayesian" in the index-- nothing. The index is entirely inadequate, especially for a reference work. If I had paid for this book with my own money, I would have returned it.
The statistics of extremes has a variety of applications including: civil engineering, reliability, meteorology, seismology, hydrology, insurance, and finance, to name but a few. The classic reference has been the book by Gumbel-- a tour-de-force of the subject. However, that book predates modern developments in numerical methods so it is dated. Castillo (1988) updates Gumbel with a number of results that don't even appear in the Kotz book.
I wish I could recommend "Extreme Value Distributions" because of the many fine other books authored by Kotz, but I can't. Unfortunately, it looks like it was put together in a hurry, the reader deserves better.

When Blackwell Business Publishers published Spiral Dynamics, they did not include an index developed by Don Beck and Chris Cowan (mistakes like this do happen sometimes with academic publishers). Interested readers can contact the authors directly at ... for further details and updated research. Any initial "X-Files" feeling is dispelled once you become more familiar with the model, and the milieu that it evolved from.
Spiral Dynamics draws extensively upon over 40 years of research by Beck, Cowan, and their mentor Clare W. Graves. The original research data includes over 500,000 interviews conducted over five continents, and is comparable to other "biopsychosocial systems development" research conducted by Jane Loevinger, Stanley Milgram, Laurence Kohlberg, Erik Erikson etc.
What makes Graves unique however is that he created a dynamic model of human consciousness evolution which can assimilate other models and worldviews. He also recognised that insights from Cognitive Psychology, Genetics, and Neurophysiology would need to be examined. Fans of NeuroLinguistic Programming, General Systems Theory, Memetics and the Human Potential Movement will find a wealth of material, plus reading resources for further specialised research.
SD has been applied to resolve racial tension in South Africa, in education systems and government, by the World Future Society State of the World Forum, Arlington Institute, and Integral Institute, and by major companies such as Nedbank and SouthWest Airlines. Anyone questioning its credentials simply haven't done their research.
Its scope and depth surpasses what masquerades as "snake-oil" solutions: SD asks "why" such solutions are posed; what the prevailing "life conditions" are in an individual's life, company's growth, or country's situation (the interaction of historical times, geographic place, human existential problems, and social circumstances); and in examining change, questions "from what . . . to what?"

The Continuing Development of Spiral Dynamics

The speed of personal and societal change can seem bewildering, and there have been many attempts to try and make sense of what is going on in the world.

Spiral Dynamics is one very interesting model that was originally developed by the psychologist Clare W. Graves. He was a friend and colleague of Abraham Maslow, who had developed the well-known Hierarchy of Needs, ascending from basic biological needs to the more complex psychological motivations - belongingness, esteem, cognitive, esthetic and self-actualizing - once the basic needs have been satisfied. In Maslow's scheme, the needs at each level need to be at least partially satisfied before the needs of the next level start to determine action. But Graves' research lead him to believe that there were levels beyond self-actualization, and that different people achieved different kinds of development at different times in their lives. Over the last 30 years, Spiral Dynamics has been developing in a number of new directions. Ken Wilber has been working with Don Beck and has incorporated many of the ideas into his Integral Psychology, and I have recently shown how some of the ideas are immensely helpful in the field of health and wellness.

One of the important concepts of Spiral Dynamics is the meme. The word meme was first introduced by the Oxford University biologist Richard Dawkins, who used the word to mean things that are transmitted or broadcast through culture. Good examples would be songs, ideas or fashions in clothes, which are quickly disseminated through a culture, rather like a virus spreads around a population. These are now called "little memes." Spiral Dynamics takes a broader view. Each level of development is represented on a spiral and is called a "Value Meme" (vMeme), which expresses itself through the "little memes." You will normally see "vMeme" abbreviated to Meme, with a capital "M" to distinguish it from the "little memes." Each Meme is a code, or a system of information. We are each composites of memetic levels.

I was very interested to hear what Don Beck - one of the most important figures in the development of Spiral Dynamics, and heir apparent to Clare Graves - had to say about the current state of the model. There is one thing that marks out Spiral Dynamics from many other models: it has been successfully applied in some very difficult situations around the world, most famously in the post-Apartheid era in South Africa.

On the first CD, which Don has entitled The Dance of the Double Helix: How Humans Emerge, he begins with a broad overview, which includes a recoding of Clare Graves himself. For people not familiar with Spiral Dynamics, it might be necessary to go back and listen to the first CD again later: he uses a small number of terms without defining them.

On the second CD - The Codes by Which We Live -Don Beck provides a lucid description of the first six developmental levels. This is the clearest description that I've ever heard or read.

The third CD - The Leap into Second Tier - discusses a quantum jump in consciousness and the emergence of new moral codes and ways of thinking and behaving that promise t revolutionize the world around us.

On CD Four - The Dynamics of Leadership - Don gets very practical, in applying the model to leadership, natural organizations and the importance of understanding that people and organizations often have multiple bottom lines.

The Fifth CD - The Many Dimensions of Change - is the most dense of all of them in terms of concepts: Don discusses the phenomena of human emergence, the eight change variations, and the three components of change. His discussion of alpha fit, beta condition, gamma trap and delta surge is terrific for anyone who has ever tried to negotiate changes in relationships or in organizations.

Finally, CD Six - Stitching Together Our Wounded World - is a series of very practical lessons in how Spiral Dynamics can and has been used, and some pointers for the future.

These CDs are well produced and come with a small booklet and color chart. All the materials are of the same high quality that we have come to associate with Sounds True who produced and published the CDs.

If you are a complete beginner in the field of Spiral Dynamics, these CDs are sure to get you oriented very quickly, and you should be able to see how the theory applies in your life. The booklet contains some precise questions for helping you map your vMemes. It can be immensely helpful to do this exercise with people with whom you are in relationship. If you are already familiar with some of the concepts of Spiral Dynamics, you will likely still find some interesting material and a stimulating discussion. You may want to use the CDs to flesh out you understanding, before going on to the book Spiral Dynamics by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan.

Whichever group you are in - beginner or more advanced student, you may well need to listen to some parts of the CDs more than once.

Valuable Theory - Difficult Writing

This book is based on the work of Clare W. Graves, a professor of psychology at the Union College (Schenectady, NY) who developed an evolutionary model of values somewhere in the 60ties. I was introduced to this material through the work of Wyatt Woodsmall, who wrote a more accessible introduction to this material as part of the book "Time Line Therapy and the Basis of personality" (published in 1988). If you are interested in studying values and cultures, I recommend buying both books.
The two reasons why this book only gets 3 stars are 1) the way it is written and 2) because the authors have written it "as if" they are the *sole* owners of this theory, a kind of thinking that shows they haven't reached the highest level of evolution themselves. The second remark may explain why one cannot distinguish between the original thinking of GRAVES and the extensions of the authors. The first remark explains why this book is hard to "digest": the structure of the book doesn't make it easy to collect all information for each level, nor is it easy to derive from the book how one would apply these principles, say in a therapeutic or business context. Also an index is missing, but that is partly compensated by adding a good resource list at the end of the book.
Graves' model is a dynamic model of human consciousness evolution, which includes 7 levels of development, each with particular kinds of thinking and beliefs. At jobEQ we recommend this kind of thinking to find out whether someone you want to hire is "compatible" with your companies culture. Beck and Cowan have been using Graves work on an even larger level: looking at values that are valid across cultures and subcultures in society, for instance helping to resolve conflicts between subcultures in the UK and South-Africa.

Lisa Urry (Units 1-3) is a professor and developmental biologist, and recent Chair of the Biology Department, at Mills College. After graduating from Tufts University with a double major in Biology and French, Lisa completed her Ph.D. in molecular and developmental biology at MIT. She has published a number of research papers, most of them focused on gene expression during embryonic and larval development in sea urchins. Steven A. Wasserman
Steve Wasserman (Unit 7) is a professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He earned his A.B. in Biology from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from MIT. Through his research on regulatory pathway mechanisms in the fruit fly Drosophila, Steve has contributed to the fields of developmental biology, reproduction, and immunity. As a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and UCSD, he has taught genetics, development, and physiology to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. He has also served as the research mentor for more than a dozen doctoral students and more than 50 aspiring scientists at the undergraduate and high school levels. Steve has been the recipient of distinguished scholar awards from both the Markey Charitable Trust and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation. In 2007, he received UCSD’s Distinguished Teaching Award for undergraduate teaching.

Peter V. Minorsky
Peter Minorsky (Unit 6) is a professor at Mercy College in New York, where he teaches evolution, ecology, botany, and introductory biology. He received his B.A. in Biology from Vassar College and his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Cornell University. He is also the science writer for the journal Plant Physiology. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Peter taught at Kenyon College, Union College, Western Connecticut State University, and Vassar College. He is an electrophysiologist who studies plant responses to stress. Peter received the 2008 Award for Teaching Excellence at Mercy College.

Not really a book .. just journal entries from the diary of a fellow traveller. Most of it is just places and locations but amazing how he toiled through 1000 miles including some weather conditions, sleeping in cowshed and road side, of course consuming meagre amount rice to keep the body alive, which was not co-operating much either towards the end - all for the purpose of showering his blessing on any one who is fortunate enough to have met him. It gave me goosebumps at the end.
