It is an unpretentious guide. It is not supposed to be a huge textbook. Do you want a text book? Go get one for hundreds of bucks, that's OK, I have some on my bookshelf. But for an undergraduate student, for a first year resident, even for a well-seasoned pathologist as me, this is a nice piece of reading, it's worth the $10 you pay for it, and it is useful.

Excellent introduction to Haematology

Haematopathology is one of those subjects which are usually left out of the medical school curriculum, resulting in the fact that many newly qualified doctors have a knowledge of haematology which is sketchy at best. This book aims to address that, and I think it does this perfectly. Unpretentious and concise, it peels the subject to its core, providing an outline of haematology and how different conditions manifest themselves. There is more than enough information to get you through finals, and if, like me, you are interested in the field of haematology but don't know where to start, you should look no further than this handy little book.

Very informative and readable.

I work in this field for a living. I would look something up and then find myself reading chapters because it is well thought out and presented logically, completely and with a sense of humor. Some of the passages had me laughing out loud. I would highly recommend this text for any medical technologist,clinical laboratory scientist or hematology intern or resident. A very enjoyable read and comprehensive without being "obsessive".

Beautifully written, and making full use of every archaeological source, this book adds much to our overall picture of Neanderthal society, particularly in showing how the material record (rich from 115,000 to 35,000 years ago) reflects changing behaviour. While he discusses them in detail, the author finally takes a middle way between the two extremes of theory which have developed on how similar to modern humans Neanderthals really were.

The Neanderthal Legacy

One of the serious books on the subject, which addresses many technical points. The book is older, which the discounted price I paid reflects, and I am happy with my purchase. For someone who is seriously interested in the subject and wishes a good reference, the book fills the role well. (Other reviews go into more detail on this point.) I am a non-expert, so this should be taken into account by the reader of the review.

Detailed but not boring

Great overview of Neanderthal archaeology, with one of the best accounts of their tool technology in any textbook. Strictly based on facts, and not given to speculation, he gives a very conservative assessment of their cognitive abilities. Offers a clear structure, and is not difficult to read. Not just for academics.

Excruciating but worthwhile

If you really want just the FACTS about Neanderthals, this is the book to read. Even if you are not an academic, but just a curious lay-person like myself. Yes, it can be excruciatingly detailed in examining everything that is so far known about these extinct hominids, (I had no idea that you could write hundreds of pages about how rocks are chipped!) but those details can be very revealing if considered rationally and prudently as Mellars does. There are plenty of maps, illustrations and graphs to support the text and the wrap-up at the end is conservative yet expressive. As Mellars writes:

"Perhaps the most intriguing and enigmatic aspects of the Middle Paleolithic period is how and why it came to an end, after a period of around 200,000 years of remarkable stability. From the preceding chapters it has emerged that while there were significant shifts in the precise morphology and technology of stone tool production, subsistence patterns, site distributions etc. at different stages of the Middle Paleolithic, very few if any of these seem to reflect any radical reorganization or restructuring of technological, economic or social patterns. It was, after all, a time when large parts of Europe were still in the grip of an Ice Age.

The only way to fully know how extraordinary the new type of human being was/is, is to study carefully the old types, and that is what this book does so well. You will be left in no doubt whatsoever that Neanderthals are NOT our ancestors though, indeed, there may have been some extremely limited genetic mixing as some recent DNA studies show. It may be significant to note that the mtDNA does not show mixing, so whatever infusion of Neanderthal genetics into modern human lines was probably a Neanderthal raping a homo sapiens woman. A careful consideration of the characteristics of Neanderthals - what little can be discerned, but mainly their lack of creativity over 200,000 years or more of existence - along with the very small percentage of dna mixing, may give clues to certain personality pathologies among modern humans, such as psychopathy. One has only to imagine the mixture of the non-creative, almost parasitic Neanderthal personality with the dynamic, creative, Cro-Magnon to get an image of the aggressive, dominating psychopath that is devoid of creativity, has no ability to conceive of time and space, and functions totally opportunistically. Perhaps that is the real "Neanderthal Legacy"? Just speculating.

I will note that, as is the habit of most academics, there is quite a bit of jargon that is specific to the field and if you are not a specialist, this may be a bit of a barrier to understanding. Just keep a notebook handy and jot down some of the terms and their definitions as they appear and you'll be fine. The main confusing elements have to do with terms used for dating, so it can help to pay close attention to chapter 2 and continuously refer to the graph on page 10. If you are persistent, by the time you are finished, you'll be tossing off jargon with the best of them!

The book is a bit pricey and tedious for the lay-reader, but, as noted, if you want to get down to the nitty-gritty, this one does it best. Alternatively, you could read Ian Tattersall's and Jeffrey Schwartz's Extinct Humans or Paul Jordan's Neanderthal: Neanderthal Man and the Story of Human Origins But for the fullest picture of this fascinating period in the Earth's history, I would recommend all three and more.

this lovely book is filled with incredible examples of fine furniture, as well as step by step instructions, with specific tools and materials for restoring, rehabilitating, or recreating the pieces.
a wide variety of styles and techniques are presented here, and these are applicable not just to furniture but to panels, walls, and other substrates. an inspiring, must-have book for the decorative artist!

I gave this book only four stars so prespective buyers will not think this book, in itself, will be means to becoming a furniture restorer. Rather, this book will give someone a starting point so they can know what direction to proceed. There is not enough information on any of the techniques in the book to enable an initiate to perform credible restorations or to master any specific technique itself.
That said, one piece of cardinal advice I would give. Never practice on the object you are trying to restore.
Finally, a library of books, advice and instruction from someone in the craft, and experience, all beyond the scope of this book, are the requirements to become adept at furniture restoration. Also, the beginning of the book states, " to be a restorer, it isn't necessary to be a cabinetmaker." That's true, but it sure helps.
After all that I recommend this book to anyone interested in restoration as an excellent beginning.

Very useful book

This is one of the best book on antique furniture restoration. It covers the major problems that one encounters with older furniture and offers practical approaches to solve them. The sections on color matching are better than I have seen elsewhere. I am a beginner, so I am not just attempting the easy stuff. Detailed chapters on gilding, etc. will be of interest to more advanced refinishers. Lots of very clear pictures. Beautifully printed too. Five stars.

Nice try - but lacks depth

The very best parts of the book are the glossary and the appendices. The rest is a bunch of information put together in the most sloppy way I have ever seen. In the unlikely event that an editor actually did go through the book before publishing - he or she ought to be fired.

The text is, as far as I can see, a lot of print-outs from a spreadsheet, collected in overall categories and given a spiral back. Then sold at $150 !!!

The information is given in a list-format, with a keyword and the appropriate factors of relevance for a given section

For example: On page 8, section "chemical compounds", dynamite is listed, as an explosive, not a chemical warfare agent, and as a secondary explosive.

So far, so good - but the very same information is repeated in the next 13 lines in the very same table (?!?).

There are numerous examples of such duplicate information, which all in all becomes very tiresome.

The format is a good idea, sections with overall topics, "compounds" "pyrotechnics" and so on, and then a keyword based 'look it up' list of basic information.

So in the end two stars: One for the format, and one for the appendices.

The Practice of EFT

“EFT” is the abbreviation commonly used to label a new treatment procedure, Emotional Freedom Techniques. Its treatment methods are easy to use and produce sensational results.

The central tenet of its theory is that any discontent or disorder in our lives is the result of an imbalance in the energy that flows through our bodies. Its main concern is the restoration of harmony using the meridian points of Chinese acupuncture.

EFT is also known most commonly as Tapping. This term arises from the fact that the points are lightly tapped during a treatment session.

A complete EFT sequence can be performed in less than a minute. The Tapping round follows a descending movement that travels down from the face to the hands. You must give between seven and ten light taps to each point.

SUMMARY OF THE FIVE STEPS OF AN EFT SEQUENCE

1. Concentration on the problem
2. Evaluating the intensity of the pain
3. The setup that momentarily causes the inner barriers to fall
4. The Tapping sequence accompanied by the reminder phrase that keeps the problem in the forefront of your mind
5. Revaluation of the intensity of the pain to determine how much progress you have made at the end of the sequence

EFT AND THE MEMORY OF TRAGIC EVENTS

When difficult events remain anchored in our energetic system, they produce the disruptions responsible for our physical and emotional pain. Feelings of fear, hatred, anger, injustice, powerlessness, guilt, despair as well as physical pains, insomnia, and nightmares can all be part and parcel of an inner upheaval that can last a lifetime if left untreated.

EFT leads to a sense of tranquillity, over the course of a series of rounds, the number of which will depend on the quantity of aspects to be treated with respect to the episode in its entirety. Treatment begins with the first memory that comes to mind, followed by another, and then another, in a series of rounds that will eventually eliminate the emotional charge.

EFT AND PHOBIAS

All phobic responses are caused by an energetic disruption that can be eliminated quite easily by EFT. To get rid of a phobia, it is important to treat all its aspects. For example, for a fear of flying: there are the fears of taking off, landing, episodes of turbulence, and having no control over the engine as well as the fear that the plane will fall from the sky, fear of being trapped with no way out, and so on and so forth. In a panic situation, several rounds of Tapping should suffice to rapidly restore a sense of calm. Knowing that you have this tool available at any time provides a sense of courage that one would not have otherwise.

EFT AND ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS

The true reason for these needy behaviors lies in the need of calming a deep anxiety. This is a pain that the individual will temporarily mask with the substance of his or her choice, carrying out a tenuous treatment that will transform into dependency.

EFT does not address this dependency but does address its profound cause, an anxiety, and therefore a negative emotion, which, like any other negative emotion, is simply an energy blockage. But while the treatment is simple, the opposition put up by the subconscious, on the other hand, can complicate matters significantly.

Dependencies are almost always accompanied by the psychological reversal that we discussed earlier. Countering this reversal will require frequent treatment during the first days after the individual has quit taking the addictive substance. This treatment takes place during the setup stage of the EFT sequence, followed by a round of Tapping, for each craving, for as long as all the energy blockages responsible for the feeling of anxiety have not been eliminated.

Given the fact that EFT heals the anxiety responsible for the dependency, there is no risk of developing a new dependency to replace the one that has been eliminated, nor of taking on pounds and pounds of additional weight, a well-known consequence of quitting smoking.

The EFT Serenity Procedure

The Serenity Procedure consists of making a list of all the difficult incidents that have occurred in our life. This period should span the time from earliest childhood to five years ago. Next EFT is applied to each of them until their memory no longer inspires any negative feeling. Fear, sorrow, and anger have all been replaced by a deep sense of tranquillity.

It is imperative to write down at least one hundred events, even more if possible. You can always begin treating the first memories without waiting to complete your list. Do not be surprised if you have trouble getting started. The subconscious mind is hardly a zealot for change. While it is wonderfully well-adapted to our life circumstances, it can oppose our desires for transformation if it decides that there are too many risks involved.

Every event you catalog should be short and precise.A situation that lasted several hours, or even several days, is comprised of different episodes that are to be treated separately. They are separate aspects of the same problem.

Write down the facts quite precisely. Do not say: “My father is abusive,” but go into the details of specific events like: “The violent spanking my father gave me in the kitchen,” “the bicycle he took away from me,” or “he belittled me in front of my friends.”

Treat one event at a time, until the entire emotional charge it carries has evaporated. In the case where it is hard to reduce, do several rounds of Tapping on all the angles of the situation. Work on a specific event only takes several moments so working at this pace you will have erased the painful mark left by one hundred difficult events in three months. You can already imagine the benefits. The ideal would be to devote fifteen minutes to the procedure every day, and more if you can.

That's the argument of Bruce Douglass's Real-Time UML, which presents the latest modeling techniques using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in the context of embedded design. This book is a successful introduction to both UML and the vagaries of embedded systems, which have their own set of pitfalls and constraints for efficiency and high reliability.

Real-Time UML is good at presenting the basics of modeling objects, from class design to object behavior, with an eye for the rich set of diagrams available in UML used along the way. Examples, from elevators to medical systems, are used to illustrate the theory.

The authors are up to speed with the latest research on "patterns" (reusable higher order designs) that can be used for embedded systems--especially within the chapters on design. Real-Time UML: Developing Efficient Objects for Embedded Systems is an introduction to object-oriented analysis and design for hard real-time systems using the Unified Modified Language (UML). UML is a third generation modeling language which rigorously defines the semantics of the object metamodel and provides a notation for capturing and communicating object structure and behavior. Many methodologists-including Grady Booch (Booch Method), Jim Rumbaugh (Object Modeling Technique (OMT), Ivar Jacobson (Object-Oriented Software Engineering (OOSE), and David Harel (Statecharts)-collaborated to achieve UML. A great many more participated, myself included, in the specification of the UML, and we believe that it is the leading edge in modeling for complex systems.

There are very few books on the use of objects in real-time systems and even fewer on UML. Virtually all object-oriented books focus primarily on business or database application domains and do not mention real-time aspects at all. On the other hand, texts on real-time systems have largely ignored object-oriented methods. For the most part, they fall into two primary camps: those that bypass methodological considerations altogether and focus solely on "bare metal" programming, and those that are highly theoretical with little advice for actually implementing workable systems. Real-Time UML: Developing Efficient Objects for Embedded Systems is meant to be a concise and timely bridge for these technologies, presenting the development of deployable real-time systems using the object semantics and notation of the UML. This has many advantages, including focusing the development process of real-time systems into logical, concrete steps that progress in an orderly fashion with a standardized notation. Audience

The book is oriented towards the practicing professional software developer and the computer science major, in the junior or senior year. This book could also serve as an undergraduate or graduate level text, but the focus is on practical development rather than a theoretical introduction. Very few equations will be found in this book, but more theoretical and mathematical approaches are referenced where appropriate. The book assumes a reasonable proficiency in at least one programming language and at least a cursory exposure to the fundamental concepts of both object orientation and real-time systems. Organization

The book follows the normal analysis--design--implementation approach followed by most development projects. The first chapter identifies the fundamental concepts of objects and real-time systems. The next two discuss analysis--the identification and specification of the problem to be solved. Analysis is divided into two portions: black box requirements analysis using context diagrams, use cases and scenarios (Chapter 2), and capturing the key concepts and their relationships from the problem domain (Chapter 3).

Design follows analysis and adds details as to how the analysis model should be implemented. Design is broken up into three parts, each taken up in a separate chapter--Architectural, Mechanistic, and Detailed design. The parts differ in the scope of their concerns. Architectural design deals with very broad scope strategic decisions, such as tasking models and inter-processor design. Mechanistic design focuses on how groups of objects collaborate to achieve common purposes. Both architectural and mechanistic design chapters include a number of patterns that have been found generally applicable in real-time systems. Finally, detailed design specifies the internal structure and function of individual objects.

Throughout the book, the UML notation is introduced as needed. However, a notational summary is provided in the appendix so that this book can continue to serve as a reference guide as your projects evolve. Examples

Two different approaches to examples are used in different texts. Some authors (and readers) prefer a single example taken throughout the entire book to illustrate the various concepts. The other approach is to use many different examples with the idea that it is more useful to see the concepts used in a wide variety of applications. This book uses a compromise approach. A variety of real-time examples illustrate the concepts and notation of UML in several real-time application domains, but the examples reappear in different chapters of the book. This approach reinforces the concepts by showing how they apply in various situations. Special care has been taken to select real-time examples with rich behavioral semantics, however examples which are not strictly real-time are used where appropriate. Real-time systems programmers face unique challenges. Qualities such as execution speed and memory size are paramount in the development of real-time systems, and performance is a fundamental aspect of correctness in this domain. Given these constraints and requirements, it is fair to say that the development of real-time systems is more challenging than that of most software systems. Yet the lack of a standard notation and design process has discouraged embedded systems developers from adopting a revolutionary new approach to software design--object technology--that has produced clearly identifiable benefits in less specialized software applications.

If you write embedded software go and buy this now

Simply stated the first book to devote itself to UML for real-time systems and the only author that does it. Although my background is not in the embedded world, this book introduced me to real-time systems, discussed the advantages in taking the OO approach to developing embedded systems and then explained the UML notation with the real-time extensions and a process for applying it. A MUST HAVE for every embedded developer. END

Some parts excelent, some poor

I have mixed feelings for this book. Parts of the book are awful, other parts are really excellent. The overall impression is still that this is a book worth reading, and keeping in a bookshelf not too far away from your workplace for real time work.
The explanations about state diagrams is really good. In general the treatment of state is the strong side of the book. The book explains state machines and how they can, and cannot, be used in a good way. The book also describes two patterns for state machine design.
Most parts of the book are well written and easy to read. The design patterns described in the book are not rocket science, but they are (unlike many pattern descriptions) described in a way that is easy to read and understand.
The first chapter is awful (skip it, or read on: it will get better). The language in this chapter is dry and hard to read. There is no useful information here. The author declares that real-time design/programming is harder than desktop program design. He also declares that object-oriented programming is generally better than block-structured. The readers already knows this, or otherwise we would not be reading this book.
The remarks about C++ in the book are about 50 % accurate and 50 % false. The author seems to have missed a lot of the C++ programming paradigms that have become common during the last five years.
I had the expectation that this book would include some insight that you couldn't combine yourself from experience in desktop focused UML and traditional (block-structured, functional) real-time design. The book did not live up to this expectation. (But I guess that expectation was unrealistic.)

I have been converted.

Thanks to this book, I have finally taken the plunge with OOD for our latest safety critical embedded project. I am surprised at how gentle my induction has been. I had always believed that OO methods were inappropriate for real time applications but Bruce Douglass has persuaded me otherwise. He also provides the UML toolbox to pick and choose from and with these tools designs can be expressed in a pithy and unambiguous way that Douglass demonstrates clearly with many examples.
Real time concepts and descriptions, of different architectural designs for example, are made that much clearer by the use of UML. This coupled with a repetitious reinforcement of the concepts and notation of the UML itself have the effect of accelerating understanding as the book progresses.
