A very helpful text

Everything I know about Automata Theory I learned from an early draft version of this book while enrolled in an Undergraduate course taught by Professor Rich. After completing her courses, I spent several semesters tutoring students in Automata using her book as a reference. While I have not read the final version of her text, the working versions I saw were very good. Automata Theory is a difficult subject to learn, and even harder to master, but I feel that Professor Rich's book does an excellent job of breaking down and organizing the material into digestible chunks. Having both learned, and to a lesser degree, taught from this book, I would give it my highest recommendation to any student interested (or required) in learn Automata Theory. Out of all of the computer science books I bought during my college career, this is one of the few that I actually read.

To be honest, most students will hate Automata Theory, and to those that do I offer that this book is probably your best (and least painful) chance at passing the course. For the few students find the material intriguing, perhaps even enjoyable, this book will open your eyes to Automata Theory and provide you with a strong foundational understanding of its concepts.

Good Connection Between Practice and Theory, Pedagogical

I am currently taking a graduate course in a computational theory/theoretical computer science, so I am looking for any resource that can help me get a better understanding of the theoretical foundations. I found Dr. Rich's book very helpful in assisting me understand theoretical concepts that have practical applications, or understand the theoretical concepts that are usually obscured beneath the
maze of the mathematical symbolism, but that are otherwise not that difficult to grasp.

I have found her visual depictions of the problems very helpful, and I have specially liked how she connects theoretical computers science (e.g. halting, undecidability) with common software engineering tools and tasks such as compilers and programming languages.

Standard topics are covered as in other leading books in the field (Sipser, Hopcroft, Papadimitrou, ). The difference is that it seems that Dr. Rich has spent more time explaining and illustrating concepts (book is 1100 pages long). I still recommend other books as the primary sources as they are as complete as they are concise, but I also recommend
using this book if nothing as the supplementary learning aid.

This book helped me understand the problems required for my homeworks and exams, so, if for nothing else, I have to give it just for that fact five stars.

A Lifesaver In Models Of Computation

Got this as an additional resource for my models class, which was an unbelievably abstract mind beating for me, with an assigned text that was virtually devoid of examples and far too mired in well-crafted verbosity. This book gave me a lifeline in the form of excellent terse descriptions of all the standard models topics -recognition problem, generation problem, complexity, etc. etc. combined with an exhaustive number of excellent examples. It won't save you from the mind bending abstractness of the subject, but it'll most likely give you the information you need to succeed in models -mine already has 50+ bookmarks in it, with more to follow. Expensive, but a bargain at twice the price.

And to the person who complains about "Typ-Os" causing a loss of credibility" -really? It pretty much sounds like you just didn't get the material, friend. I wouldn't feel bad about that, as it's a difficult subject for all but the smart kids, but to then turn around and assign a verbally misshapen 1 star rating to an excellent book on the subject is a)something I'd personally equate to breaking a**crack etiquette in a busy cafeteria for embarrassment value, and b) a disservice to those of us struggling in a class that is a CS degree requirement that really need the life line that this book represents. Please fellow CS students, feel free to ignore the negative reviews of those who can't even name a models topic that they felt wasn't well-explained and get this book -it'll save ya!

A Year of Writing Dangerously

A Year of Writing Dangerously by Barbara Abercrombie is a book that all writers should use to help them write 365 days out of the year. It is filled with fun anecdotes, quotes, writing prompts, and much more!

A Year of Writing Dangerously is a seriously useful tool to help with writing, even dangerously if you so desire. Each day has an anecdote or inspiration to some degree for you to read. Beneath that is an inspirational quote from an author, which I always found to be highly encouraging.

The days aren't listed by days of the month, they are numbered 1-365, so you can start your year of writing on any day of the year you wish. I really like the whole idea of this book, and hopefully in a year from now I'll be finished with my very own novel.

I found this book to be an incredibly helpful writer's tool. It inspired me to not only come up with a new idea for a novel, but also pushed me to go back and look at one I started writing a few years ago. Barbara Abercrombie is an excellent writing coach just from this book alone, and I'm sure I would be amazed by what her actual in-person writing classes are like.

I highly recommend this book for all writers to have in their writer's space, especially if you suffer from any form of writer's block.

I desperately needed help and I got it!

I was having such a hard time writing- mostly do to anxiety- and this book helped me so much. It is very inspiring and relatable and I love how each tip has both words from Barbara and quotes from other authors. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Alonzo L. Hamby is Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at Ohio University. He is the author of several books, including Beyond the New Deal: Harry S. Truman and American Liberalism, Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman, and For the Survival of Democracy: Franklin Roosevelt and the World Crisis of the 1930s. Hamby also has received two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, a Harry S. Truman Library Institute Senior Fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars Fellowship, and the Ohio Academy of History Distinguished Service Award. Born in Missouri, Hamby graduated from Southeast Missouri State University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Great One Volume Overview

This is a fine one-volume overview of FDR's fascinating life and career. Hamby is a master of compression and an excellent stylist. He explores details of Roosevelt's life and actions in an economical manner without sacrificing texture and complexity. His account of Roosevelt's time as assistant secretary of the navy is a good example, and his summary of Roosevelt's visit to the battlefront in Europe during WWI is masterful. Hamby marches us through the 1930s with fine details of the challenges of the New Deal and the social revolution it adumbrated, and his pace and narrative power only grow in the final section on WW II, weaving together the stories of FDR's personal and political circles with the details of how FDR seized the role of commander in chief in an unprecedented manner. Hamby doesn't lose sight of the influence on Roosevelt of his two political heroes, Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, nor does he skip a good anecdote or fail to draw on the observations of those in Roosevelt's intimate circle, such as daughter Anna. It's rare to say of a work of history by a scholar that it's hard to put down, but it is.

FDR Was The New Deal

There is always a discussion about whether the New Deal worked or was a failure. Of course the mobilization of our economy before and during WWII is what really ended it. However the point the author makes more than once is that FDR WAS the New Deal. He was the face the public saw and more importantly heard on the radio during the Great Depression. The main theme Professor Hamby wants to get across is that the relief efforts were what sustained millions of American's during the period between 1933-1938, and that this more than anything else was what created the Roosevelt Coalition. Of course the NRA, AAA, WPA, PWA and the other alphabet soup agencies had a mixed record and some positive reforms that were lasting, but relief and Roosevelt's charisma may have been what really mattered in getting through the 1930s.

That a blue-blood patrician with a shockingly Eurocentric childhood (vacations in Europe and an education at Groton modeled on the English Public school system...think Tom Brown's School Days) would come to be the hero of millions of working class Americans seems almost impossible from the standpoint of 2015...but it happened. No matter how calculating and power-hungry FDR may have been by his second-term the author makes it clear that he cared about the Forgotten Man.

Highpoints: The failure of the some aspects of the "first New Deal" and the surprising success of the "second New Deal", FDR's overreach after the 1936 election, and the recession of 1937, partly because of FDR retreating from the relief efforts of 1933-35 because he was concerned about the national debt.

Professor Hamby is very objective and points out both the positive and negative traits of Roosevelt, particularly his political calculations and ability to put aside progressive idealism and recognize the political reality around him. FDR may have hated Tammany Hall and the political machine in New York City as a young progressive, but came to realize he would have to at least co-exist with them if he wanted to become President someday. Plus whatever else you can only admire a man who struck down with polio at the age of 39 decided never to give up.
The notes may intimidate a general reader and need not be referenced continually; however if something grabs your interest Hamby tells you exactly where to go to if you want to learn more about a particular part of FDR's life.

Excellent book about FDR

Man of Destiny is an amazing book. It isn't for the reluctant reader that's for sure. If you are a history fan and in particular FDR, this is a most informative book. It is very detailed and most worthy of being in any history collection. FDR was truly one of the most influential people in 20th century American history - and world history, too, for that matter. I was surprised as I read this book to learn the things I did about him. As I grow older, history does become more interesting to me. I am pleased that I got to read this book and share it with my spouse. I almost want to suggest that all of the present presidential candidates should read and perhaps learn from this book.

"Muslims reform themselves and are the reformers"

This book is a companion to his Reformist Translation of the Quran. It is heavy, it is bold, but not hard to take in for the objective mind. It is not only an explanation of the mathematical beauty of the Recitation, but a reminder to introspect and question what we once considered as truth and to transcend obsolete beliefs, to convert these into conscious acknowledgment as our freewill existence naturally meant. Reality is multidimensional, basically geometrical but in beauty infinitly complex. So is the Quran, an analogical "stereogram", as Mr. Yuksel put it.

Edip Yuksel continues, expands and complements the work of Rashad Khalifa. This book is so charged with insight, truely challenging, integrating world events, religious blindness and fanaticism, science, historical passages and personal history. He redefines basic conceptualizations and word meanings which have been distorted by ignorance, time and those who claim themselves intermediaries and representants of God on Earth. The author does not give you guidelines to follow, but rather invites you to think, explore, question and acknowledge for yourself the meaning of being muslim, Islam and the Last Testament.

In fact, I've already read this book before buying this hard copy, as Edip Yuksel is my friend. It's unlike Bible Code, as Yuksel considered opponents and used the scientific method. Very worth reading

This book changed how I look the Islam and world also!!!! As a Engineer and scientist I couldn't believe my eyes!!! Hope writer abstract all information. As a scientist I had no problem understanding the book. But it will be little challenge who not into math. My advice to Writer; Abstract!!
