Battle for the Grain

In the area of Friuli Italy back during the medieval times there was a group of people properly known as the Banadante. There work was connected primarily to the agricultural farming seasons. There job was to protect the seeds and the harvest from the witches. Going to sleep at night lying on their backs there astral bodies would float thorough the air to meet the witches for battle. Armed with fennel sticks the Benadante were ready to defend , mean while the witches were armed with Sorghum sticks. Battle would ensue, no one really got killed but there were definite winners and losers. If the witches one it would be a year of famine if the Benadante won then it would be a bountiful year. Sometimes the Benadante ventured into Hell itself to rescue the seeds. Coming back from battle they would stop I houses and seek refreshment. If cool clear water was a available they slaked their thirst with it and if not then they would raid your basement drin the wine and then urinate in the barrels. Four times a year they would go out for battle, the ember days. Sometimes they went out every Thursday to do battle.

How does o0ne become a Benadnate, one is born with a caul over their head. They keep the caul and have a priest say mass over it or a blessing. Often times the caul is worn on the person in order for them to participate in the battle. One is usually summoned in their early 20’s and their service ends when they are forty or whenever they are inclined to leave the service. Usually they are summoned by an angel or the captain . The banner for the good guys is a golden flag and a lion. The bad witches had a black flag.The bendnantes sometimes knew who each other were and who the witches were at other times they didn’t. They were vowed to silence unless they get beaten or killed.

The Inquisition by the Catholic church which was started to route out heretics and witches took a lenient view toward the Benandante during the 1300’s . Often times they would question them and then let them go. As time progress they were associated more and more with witches and they could end up being imprisoned or tortured. They were often said to have gone to the witches sabbats and partaken in profane rites that blasphemed Christianity. A total change in attitude.

It seems connected with the Witches sabbat where in a goddess like Diana in Italy or Hulda or Perchta led a procession of fairies or souls of the dead. At their sabbats they would dance, sing, drink and eat among other things. The inquisition often made it worse then what it was. Like Margaret Murray had [postulated that therer was an ancient pagan religion of Europe that was goddess and agricultural based that prdated Christianity. These seemed to be connected.

Over all good book. The author does a great job explaining the concepts that even a layman would find it comprehensible and enjoyable. It is filled with case studies that document that change and progression of attitude by the church towards the Benadante. It get’s a bit over kill at the end with the appendices but then again this is a scholarly book.Gret book

I rated this as objectively as I could no think Ginsburg's review of the inquisition trials during the 16th and 17th century was an excellent read, however, unlike other ethnographies, this one was dense with court language and definitely not for everybody. If you're interested in medieval magic and or history, definitely worth the read. Otherwise, be prepared to stop and start a lot as you research while you skim.

About the Author

Phil Mickelson followed an outstanding amateur career with a brilliant assault on the PGA Tour, compiling 36 PGA Tour victories by 2009 (second among active players), including three major championships: the Masters Tournament in 2004 and 2006 and the PGA Championship in 2005. He has played on seven U.S. Ryder Cup teams and seven U.S. Presidents Cup teams. Mickelson is in the prime of his career, and his short game is without peer in golf today.

Outstanding. This can help anyone with the short game

I bought this for my wife, who had asked for it, but we were soon competing to read it. I have read it cover to cover a half dozen times and in parts many more times. It is on my bed table, competing with several other books, and I often read it for 15-20 minutes before going to sleep. It often makes the trip to the breakfast room table on weekends. In short, it is not a book to read once and put on the shelf.

As other reviewers have noted, the key concept is the very sensible hinge and hold method, but it also emphasizes other sound principles, including accelerating through the ball and properly using bounce of the club. Phil demonstrates that in most cases, it is not necessary to make a perfect contact with the ball to have a good stroke, and he tells how to give yourself a margin for error.

He describes the many variations in pitching and chipping, including ball position in your stance, ball trajectory, choice of club (with a strong recommendation to learn to hit many different kinds of shots with a 60 degree wedge rather than using many different clubs for different situations).

This book (rather, the careful study and digestion of it) have helped me enormously. I have practiced the principles in the book, and I am now much more confident when I encounter a short shot, knowing that I understand the principles that apply to various situations and that I know what to do, based on the sound principles set forth in Phil Mickelson's book.

An extra bonus was that Phil is such an appealing character, and I couldn't help but enjoying his descriptions of his memorable shots.

One modest suggestion for a second edition: the photography in the book is great, but a good illustrator could also add illustrations to show things like contact of clubhead with ball and exact trajectory of swing in various situations.

In short, this is a great golf book, and it merits its space on my bookshelf with the only two other golf books that I own, namely, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons and Jack Nicklaus's Golf My Way. Study this book and apply it to your game. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Short Game Guide

This book is valuable because it has excellent pictures combined with descriptions of the pictured technique. There are points here for everyone but readers should keep in mind that Phil Mickelson is a professional golfer who has developed and honed his technique through now a couple decades of play and surely thousands of hours of practice. Interestingly, the book criticizes (indirectly) the short game system taught by Dave Pelz, who has served as Mickelson's short game strategy coach for a few years now. Avid golfers will find this useful.

Phil Can Help Your Short Game

Phil approaches the short game in a relaxed and sensible manner. The key takeaway from the book is the "hinge and hold" method. You'll find him using it in chipping, pitching, sand play,.... It's a worthwhile read. I've benefited from it greatly.

Excellent Guide for Health

I bought this book last week and it's excellent value for money. It has all the information about vitamins and herbs; it gives recommendations as well as warnings; advice about specific ailments, and so much more. I was surprised at the depth of information given. For example, my doctor told me that the herb known as horsetail helped halt osteoporosis when taken along with calcium. He also recommended boron. Nowhere else have I found confirmation of that information but this book mentions both. Unfortunately, you will not find horsetail listed in the index. That is the only complaint I have about the book that, occasionally, just occasionally, something was not listed in the index that was referred to in the text. If you care about your health, I recommend it. It's a no-nonsense book.

Great Update!

I had purchased Earl's bible at a used book store. Alas, it was from 1979. Even though it may have been "out of date" the information was right on! The Anniversary edition was just as good as I expected. The preliminary findings of some "vitamins" from 1979, were just as he wrote, the new bible just solidified the information. I take this information and compare with my other research, Earl is usually in-line. I don't believe anything verbatim, but this a great basis for natural health. I tell everyone who is interested in vitamins and natural supplements that this book is a MUST have in their library.

I first bought this book in the 80,s. Have given away a number of them.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
When I first bought the book I was having lower back problems. After reading the book I bought my first bottle of zinc. Within 3 days my back pain had stopped.
My wife & I both take vitimans, minerals, and herbs mentioned in the book.
Each vitamin is mentioned,what it will do for you as well as how much to take.
well woth the price.

Each chapter title is also a rule, and lots more are interspersed throughout the book. When Kristi moves in next door, Catherine hopes that the girl will become a friend, but is anxious about her reaction to David. Then Catherine meets and befriends Jason, a nonverbal paraplegic who uses a book of pictures to communicate, she begins to understand that normal is difficult, and perhaps unnecessary, to define. Rules of behavior are less important than acceptance of others. Catherine is an endearing narrator who tells her story with both humor and heartbreak. Her love for her brother is as real as are her frustrations with him. Lord has candidly captured the delicate dynamics in a family that revolves around a child's disability. she realizes how instead of getting annoyed with David’s behaviors

Rules, a realistic fiction novel written by Cynthia Lord describes a young teen living with her autistic brother and the struggles she faces while trying to have an adventurous summer with a new friend and having to deal with the stigma attached to her brother. The main character, Catherine, matures throughout the book with how she deals with her brother, David, and how she begins to accept his disabilities. At first, she is very embarrassed by David and his actions in public, but through meeting a special friend, Jason, at occupational therapy (OT), she realizes how instead of getting annoyed with David’s behaviors, she should learn to accept them and view things more positively. From the beginning of the book it is clear how insecure Catherine feels about having a brother with autism. She takes care of him a lot, but is incredibly strict with him by trying to make set rules for everything he does. David does learn these rules, but as the book continues, it seems that the rules are more “helpful” for Catherine’s feelings then for David himself. We first see Catherine’s self consciousness appear when she has a new next door neighbor, a girl her age named Kristi. All Catherine wants is a friend for the summer since her best friend is not home. She hopes she can hide David from Kristi, fearing that he would scare her off and she would not want to be Catherine’s friend. However, when Kristi does meet David, she is not immediately scared off. An ongoing issue throughout the book is how frustrated Catherine gets that she was to babysit and help David more than (she feels) her parents do. Instead of viewing her time with David as special sibling bonding time, she views it as a burden, continuously thinking about what she could be doing if she did not have to be with her brother. The only time we see Catherine genuinely excited about being with David is when she goes with her mom to take David to OT. Catherine made a new friend there, Jason, who is a boy about her age in a wheelchair and is nonverbal. They communicate through Jason’s communications book, where Catherine takes it upon herself to draw and create new words to fill up Jason’s book. She surprises him each week with a set of new words to learn so they have a better way of talking and getting to know each other. Immediately, they form a close connection, each making the other jump out of their comfort zone in some way or another. Instead of viewing and treating Jason the way she treats David, Catherine truly treats him like her friend. When Jason said he wants to run, Catherine has the idea to take him outside in the parking lot, and run while pushing him, so he could get the rush and feeling of freedom. Jason invites Catherine to his birthday party, where she decides to spend all her savings to buy him a used guitar so he could practice making music. At his party, Jason decides to ask Catherine to the community dance that night, and when she hesitates and makes excuses, not only does he call her out but also he asks why she is embarrassed of him. This is the moment when Catherine finally puts into perspective how she treats Jason and David, and how she should. She realizes that just like her, they are normal people who deserve getting treated fairly. After apologizing and asking Jason to the dance, she explains to him that she realized it was never about being embarrassed of him, it was her own insecurity of how people would view her.

Lord does a fantastic job with introducing the reader into the mind of two boys with disabilities, but also, the perspectives of family members and friends who are very relevant in these kids’ lives. Rules was Cynthia Lord’s first novel, and has won two awards: the 2007 Newberry Honor Book award and the Schneider Family Book Award. She then went on to write three more young adult books. I feel as if this book if very eye opening but also heart warming to any reader. Even though it is meant for ages 8-12, I still found myself, a 20-year-old college student, laughing, crying, and truly connecting to all the characters in this novel. I think everyone should read this to get incite into families with children that have special needs, but also, to, like Catherine, discover how to treat people with disabilities. Without being too simple or too intense of a story, Lord creates characters and a plotline that every age can enjoy and understand.

Engaging Read Filled With Light And Love

We create rules as a way to manage our time, personalities, and behaviors. We make rules in order to control our lives and give order to the world around us. Rules let us agree on a common way of acting, of certain expectations being met, and of certain boundaries not being crossed. Rules tell us how to live.

Following rules and finding our place in the world is central to Cynthia Lord’s Rules , a powerful young adult novel about a fifth grade girl, Catherine, and her autistic brother, David. Along the way they befriend a non-verbal, wheelchair-bound boy named Jason, who, despite his physical limitations, helps set Catherine free of her self-imposed and restrictive “rules.” After all, rules are meant to be broken.

Catherine wishes her brother’s autism would simply disappear, that he’d just wake up “normal” one day. But in case that doesn’t happen, she’s compiling a list of rules so “at least he’ll know how the world works, and I won’t have to keep explaining things.”

Catherine gives voice to the siblings of special needs individuals everywhere when she notes:

“Everyone expects a tiny bit from him and a huge lot from me.”

Later, Catherine talks honestly with her father.

“I have to matter, too. As much as work and your garden, and even as much as David. I need you, too.”

Catherine ponders the nature of her brother’s disability. As the father of a son with autism I found her insights packed an emotional wallop. (Note: Cynthia Lord is the mother of boy with autism.)

“How can his outside look so normal and his inside be so broken? Like an apple, red perfect on the outside, but mushy brown at the first bite.”

Catherine struggles with being both embarrassed by her brother and protective of him in equal measure. She hates when people treat her brother “like he’s invisible. It makes me mad, because it’s mean and it makes me invisible, too.”

Two of Catherine’s most simple rules are the most profound.

There are flaws in all of us—not just those with special needs.

And

We all try to do the best we can to fit in, but things don’t always end up the way we intend.

There are quite a few laughs here, and a few weepy emotional moments, too. Some of the most profound highlight the differences in Catherine and David’s mental capacities. At one point both kids get a chance to make a wish. Catherine says:

I wish everyone had the same chances. Because it stinks a big one that they don’t. What about you?

David wishes for grape soda.

Cynthia Lord plays it straight in Rules, and doesn’t overdo it on the sentimentality. The result is an engaging read filled with light and love. A couple of Lord’s rules are bound to stick with you after the novel’s close:

Sometimes you’ve gotta work with what you’ve got.

And

Looking closer can make something beautiful.

Autism and physical disabilities in Rules: Accurate and fun to read.

Of all of the rules 12 year old Catherine makes for her little brother, David, "sometimes you've gotta work with what you've got" is quite fitting when it comes to describing what it is like to have someone in your life born with a disability. Cynthia Lord enables the reader of her book, Rules, to come to understand what it is like to grow up with someone with autism. The character David shows many of the classic symptoms of autism including sensory sensitivity, functional echolalia, obsession with certain interests, and lack of social interaction skills. In the story, one of the other key characters is a 15 year old boy named Jason Morehouse. Jason has a physical disability which restricts him to a wheel chair and an apparent voice disability which limits his communication to pointing at words in a communication book. While I am not certain what specific category this low-incidence disability might fall under, it is captured in the book in as respectful and accurate a manor as David's autism. When Catherine's family brings David to occupational therapy she befriends Jason through her artistic talent when she offers to make and illustrate more words for his communication book. The main conflict in the story arises when Kristi, a girl Catherine desperately wants to be friends with, urges Catherine to invite Jason to a community dance. Catherine is scared to tell Kristi about Jason's disability because of what others might think of her. This specific conflict concerning Jason mirrors the overall conflict concerning her brother David. Catherine dislikes the way the world sees her brother and Jason but does not want to be seen as having a problem either. "The rest of the world isn't like the clinic. Other places, people stare. Or they hurry away, and I know what they're thinking. `Oh, isn't that too bad.' or "What's wrong with that kid?' ... I get so sick of it" (Lord, 179). Catherine's feelings and fears are perfectly valid. The story is very accurate when it comes to the negative reactions Catherine describes, but it also does a good job portraying the positive reactions as well. At one point Catherine takes Jason in his wheel chair out to the parking lot to "run". Pushing him as fast as she can, in that moment she doesn't care what anybody thinks of her or how she looks. When they stop and look around, many people are smiling and even cheering them on. When Catherine's brother comes with her to Jason's birthday party, Jason's family understands and accepts David warmly. In the positive and negative reactions of society described here, and in the way the individuals with disabilities are represented, Rules is accurate and fair. Not only will I use this book to give my students a compassionate perspective of what life is like for their classmates with disabilities, but also how life is for peers related to disabled persons.

Lowndes's underlying premise is that all women are desperately trying to get men's attentions whenever in public, but she really sticks to bars and clubs for her examples. Lowndes's writing style and voice do not help this audiobook. Her raspy and deep voice brings images of an older, cigarette-smoking woman, which is not a bad thing, but not particularly convincing to the audience (men who need to be convinced attractive women want them). While cheesy punch lines and excessive hyperbole may work well within the printed text, on audio these lines fall short and evoke eye rolls. Worth Every Penny And More

First of all, anyone who tells you the info in this book about the way women signal men isn't valid must have very little or even no experience with them. I've seen these same signals of interest over and over and over again. I've used this info in my life to pick-up girls and have sat in a bar and seen women give them to other men too (more often than not dude has no clue).

For example, I'm sitting next to a hardbody at the bar with her back turned. I'm facing slightly away from her watching the sports screen and notice she starts to toss her hair on and off a few times. She isn't looking at me so I'm patient and keep enjoying my meal. She says to her friend, "That chicken sure looks good"(what I was eating). So I say, "Gotta keep it healthy" to her and things went really great from there.

Just read this book and go out to your favorite bar or club and people watch the chicks in there for a while. You'll see this stuff used by them _constantly_ to signal interest. Now, that doesn't mean you can't just "assume attraction" and cold approach her without a body language signal if you want (I sometimes do). Just know that your chance of success is higher when she signals interest first.

And remember, it's called "game" for a reason....be sure to have fun first and foremost.

OVER-HYPED PSYCHOBABBLE THAT'S ALL FILLER, NO THRILLER...

... I was really looking forward to reading this book, but page after page, it was nothing more than hot air promising to enlighten the reader on this, that and the other thing but never delivering the goods on how to actually score - all it was were her personal theories bolstered by study after study of "findings" (some of these studies involving experiments with rodents, of all things)... however, most of those findings are hardly conclusive when you take into account the most critical factor of all - what women say and what they actually do are often in conflict (the author admits this herself on page 106).

For instance, take the typical gal who bemoans the lack of decent single guys as she describes her ideal man as practically being the nerd-next-door, and yet she'll only throw herself at every "bad boy" that crosses her path. One can only conclude that women are attracted to nice guys in theory only; they're ultimately ruled by their emotions and have no control over who turns them on, no matter how they may try to intellectualize what kind of guy they claim to be attracted to.

More than anything, women have very strong survival instincts and need to feel financially secure. That mindset usually leads them right to the straight-laced, button-down type with favourable income-earning potential who can fulfill that need (usually the guy she'll marry), while being sexually attracted to an entirely different type of guy altogether (the dude that rocks her world who she'll carry on an affair with).

How do I know this? Because at least 25% of the women I meet are married (or otherwise attached) and, usually after a few drinks and a couple of frisky slow dances, they'll make it very clear to me in no uncertain terms that they're in the market for a torrid affair, no strings attached, would I be interested? The reasons vary, but usually it's because they're not physically and/or sexually attracted to their mates and, in many cases, apparently never have been.

After reading so many books on the subject of picking up women (from both male and female authors), I'm now 100% convinced that your best advice will come from guys who know from experience what it takes to score. A female can't teach you how to pick her up and close the deal because:

1) every woman's level of resistance is different - some are easy to pick up, others are next to impossible;

2) every woman's concept of male beauty and appealing characteristics varies from one to the next;

3) because they're always mindful of their reputation among their social peers, many women believe that the only way they can be picked up for a one-night stand is if they have an overwhelming physical attraction to you in the first place or are otherwise flat-out drunk - most gals are confident that their "defense shield" is impenetrable and don't take into account the smooth-talking joe with all the right moves who can charm them into the sack;

4) you can't teach "chemistry" - either it's there or it isn't, and it can only be gauged in face-to-face situations;

5) what women THINK they want in theory and what they actually find themselves attracted to in real life are, more often than not, nothing alike.

As for the body language stuff? Puh-leeze. Even the average frustrated chump would be able to decipher 90% of these so-called "undercover sex signals" (fluffing her hair? licking her lips? sticking out her chest? hello, McFly! is anyone home?).

Reading this book was like listening to someone build up an elaborate joke but forgetting what the punch line was - it just didn't deliver.

Bottom line: don't bother with books about how to pick up women written by women, because most of the time, they don't even know what they really want in the first place. They might scorn the handsome, muscular ladies' man in theory, but when they're feeling sexy and want to get their freak on, guess who they'll throw themselves at?

It is 55% body language

How can we tell women are interested? Are women constantly giving us signals that we are just not picking up on, or that some men are picking up on, and acting on successfully?

Well, when it comes to body language, most men are oblivious to about 95% of the buying signals that women are giving out, or misinterpreting them.

There are photographs throughout of women demonstrating the various signals, which are supported by science.

Imagine you're walking into a bar, you see a woman, she holds eye contact for several moments then looks away and down. Is she interested? How do you respond? Subtleties in your response make or break the situation.

Experts say only 7% of communication is verbal, 38% is tonality, and 55% is body language. Which is better to know, the 7% or the 55%?

When you are talking to a woman, should you lead by turning your body towards her, or let her lead by moving her body towards you? If you don't know the answer, you need this book.

Leil understands the way men think, and speaks to the male point of view, and eerily at times seems to know what we are thinking.

Perhaps, the single most interesting and persuasive story for me concerns her aesthetically challenged friend Dan the dentist, a ladies man. Dan's insights persuaded me that being able to identify and interpret these signals will vastly improve your success with women. The idea that men go to a bar and obsess about the unattainable woman, while oblivious to signs of interest from other women, rings true, and fine tuning your perceptions will totally change your success.

Some of the signals that women give are unconscious, particularly when it comes to rapport. Your ability to identify these signals as clear indicators of interest are a roadmap to your eventual success.

Why are women attracted to bad boys and jerks? She has good insights into this.

If you are like me you may think you know a lot, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so if you are feeling hungry for more, then you need to add this to your shopping cart.

In 2006, Lyerly began the Good Birth Project, a landmark research study that asks the question: What constitutes a good birth in the eyes of the childbearing women? Her research team conducted interviews with 101 mothers about their birth experiences, and the results of that study serve as the basis for this insightful book: an effort to craft a notion of the good birth that turns... on what women say is deeply at issue for them. While the book is aimed at mothers and soon-to-be-mothers, Lyerly also has an important message for the medical community, midwives, and other birth advocates who are in the middle of an important but polarizing debate (medical vs. natural childbirth), in which women lose. Lyerly admits that no doubt there is and will likely continue to be some degree of tension between obstetrics and midwifery, but she attempts to make a place in the conversation for women's voices. Those on the side of midwifery may yet dismiss Lyerly as a medically trained and practicing obstetrician and the mother of four children who were all born by cesarean. But she also notes that every women does deserves a midwife, or rather, the kind of care that treats childbirth as a profoundly emotional and transitional experience, and that respectfully fosters a mother's agency, personal security, and connectedness. Ob/gyn Lyerly kept an open mind when she worked at Duke and then at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on her Good Birth Project—in-depth talks with 101 mothers about their experiences delivering 196 infants in homes, hospitals, and birth centers. When it comes to the “birth wars” over where and how babies should be born, she doesn’t take sides. Doctors and midwives should connect with their patients, put moms and babies together quickly, speak with care, avoid treating birth as just a medical event, and make sure women who need C-sections don’t feel they’re failures. “Birthing is birthing however you do it,” writes the empathetic Lyerly, who “experienced four such surgeries, four births, as a patient and mother.” No “mama guilt” allowed! A must read for every expectant parent and provider.

Well thought and balanced view on birth practices in USA. Throughout the book I couldn't stop thinking "I wish you were my doctor/midwife" when I had my children. Loved her insight and love for women/babies. The book brought much validation for my own grieving of the good birth I have missed in both of my labors and answered many research questions I had about the biopsychosocial loss some women experience after a negative childbirth experience.
