Heterodoxy
By Suzanne M. Yuskiw
I'm going to go against the common critical orthodoxy and say that this writer, as good as he is, and thoughtful and poetic, is unnecessarily wordy. I can see why men especially enjoy the macho aspects of this story. When the author tells stories he is very good. But I find the poetic bloviation off-putting. That said, I liked the last two chapters of philosophizing on the meaning of man, the clearest and most interesting.

*Please note that this review is concerned with the edition and not the content of the novel, which is flawless.

The book, which truly is cheap, lacks of certain niceties that most our other books contain and we take for granted. Namely: page numbers, quality paper and no errors. This edition seems to be printed on what seems to be office paper, using Times New Roman and it size is oddly large. The text is sadly littered with typos, errors and symbols which make me doubt the integrity of the translation. I haven't purchased from this publisher before, but I think they can make an effort to make its output a bit nicer.

A truly astonishing work of art
By Andrew Gretes
Saint-Exupery's "Wind Sand and Stars" is somewhat like a cockpit compressed with so much life and adventure that you'll be glutted as a reader and need to savor the book's chapters in separate sit-downs. This, I argue, is a good thing, for the book lingers with you and welcomes the sort of reflection which we rarely have the time to indulge in today. For example, the section about Guillaumet's crash landing in the Andes is simply sublime and will leave you with goosebumps as a reader. It's one of the more potent and pithy elegies in literature. And the fact that this section is bested in this book a few chapters later with the rather impeccable "Prisoner of the Sand" chapter, which details the author's own near-death experience being lost in the desert, shows how replete this book really is with visceral and pathos-rending passages. Other pilots have perhaps had similar experiences, but Saint-Exupery's brilliance lies not in his simple experiences (remarkable as they are) but in his ability to transubstantiate these experiences into spiritual maxims, philosophical meditations. The text, in a nutshell, is fantastically "Zorbatic."
