When the Marquis of Amberley's coach is waylaid by highwaymen and his coachman shot, he is forced to take shelter at the first house he finds and is subsequently trapped there for a week by a severe snow storm.
Oakleigh Manor is the home of Rosalind Vernon who lives alone but for her devoted servants and an ill-natured parrot, cut off from the outside world by the tragic result of a childhood accident. But Rosalind is brave and bright and totally devoid of self-pity - and it is these qualities which, as the days pass and the snow continues to fall, touch Amberley's heart.
On his return to London, the Marquis persuades Rosalind's brother, Philip, to bring her to town for a taste of society, despite her handicap. But the course of Amberley's courtship is far from smooth. Philip Vernon actively dislikes him; Rosalind appears to be falling under the spell of the suavely elegant Duke of Rockliffe; and worse still, Amberley is haunted by a dark and terrible secret that, if revealed, may cause him to lose Rosalind forever.

One of my absolute favourites.
By HelenaP
I honestly can't say enough about how much I love this author's writing. This book in particular, and her "Lucifer's Champion", have long been on my keeper shelf and are happy re-reads for me whenever I feel in need of cheering up. The quality of writing is excellent, the characters are well-rounded and for the most part likable (and even when they're unlikable, they're certainly memorable! And developed well enough that you fervently want to give them a kick in the rear end *ahem*Robert Dacre), but it's the dialogue that truly shines. I sometimes find that with romance novels, I almost want to skip over the tedious misunderstandings and hateful comments in the beginning and middle section and just get straight to the parts that are actually romantic and fun to read - which too often is limited to about the last two pages of the book. "The Parfit Knight" and "Lucifer's Champion", however, are two of that rare variety of book - the ones that I don't *want* to get to the end, because I'm enjoying every line and every nuance throughout the entire story. Every time I read this book, I'm invested in the characters, I care about what happens to them, and they never fail to make me laugh. I'm also THRILLED because I've only just discovered that there's a sequel to this book. I thought the Duke of Rockcliffe was just crying out for his own book, but assumed that Juliet Blyth was just never able to get around to giving him one. I've since discovered that Juliet Blyth is a pen name for Stella Riley and the existence of "Mesalliance", which I'm honestly on tenterhooks to read. I have all fingers crossed that it's going to make a reappearance sooner rather than later! Inquiring minds want to know what happened to Rock - and whether his too-cool-for-the-ball attitude survives falling wig over buckled heels in love! :) Many, many thanks to Stella Riley for starting to republish her works; I know I'm not the only grateful reader out there!

"And now that child had become a woman - bright, gallant, unique - and his love."

Plot:
Ten years ago a head injury cost Rose her sight and her independence. When Amberley enters her life she discovers all that she lost, and what she needed. Amberley found someone to love. But secrets, theirs and others, will work to keep them apart.
Comments:
- Historical Georgian Romance, 1774.
- 388 pages, 10386 kindle locations
- m/f - clean, not before marriage.
- There's a bit of an age difference between our H and h - Amberley's 34 to Rose's 22 - but more significant is the gap in experience. As a result of her sight loss Rose has spent her life secluded and isolated. Part of Amberley's goal is to see her enter the world and able to make her own choices - preferably him.
Opinion:
I haunt the Amazon Customer Forums for recommendations of new books. There are so many out there it is impossible to know every one. And recently Stella Riley came up as a favourite author and "The Parfit Knight" as a favourite book. So I gave it a go.
And I wasn't disappointed.
First published in 1986 under the pen name "Judith Blyth", "The Parfit Knight" has been reissued as an ebook as Riley embraces self-publishing. It's a nice, easy read with enjoyable characters and strong story. It does strike one as of-the-time; it certainly doesn't read as a contemporary-written historical with an abundance of sex. But neither is it an 80s bodice ripper. It's just a nice story with memorable characters.
A re-reader.

Excellent read
By Georgette Austen
I was wary of downloading this title with only one review of 5 stars, but I am so glad I took a chance. The author writes dialogue so well--the characters leap off the page. There are two couples with equally interesting stories. The hero and heroine are both wonderful. This is a marvelous read. There are a few issues with the kindle version--some editing problems. I wish there were better editors now. I do not believe that these issues exist in the original text because the author writes so well. This is just a delight to read. If you like dialogue and interaction between characters that is realistic and witty, you will love this book. Off to download another title about the Duke of Rockliffe (friend of the hero) entitled The Msalliance.
